1. Today’s markets and trade is not that simple.
2. It’s possible for those that trade to benefit even when their country does not.
3. The welfare of a country does not always align with the interest of those trading in a market. Tariffs can serve to protect critical domestic industry.

So “the country” takes precedent over individual decisions/freedom?

Incorrect.

Economic transactions in a market *only* take place if both individuals believe that they are better off exchanging.

You do not buy an apple at the market unless you value the Apple more than the money it costs

I think he’s saying that you can’t superimpose what’s good for a country on to what’s good for an individual and have a perfect match. And without a viable country as a strong trading platform, the individual would lose in any case.

A neverending debate on this board happens with respect to China. SFP and Roger tend to say we have a healthy relationship where both sides benefit. The tariff brigade says China is cheating this system by benefiting from slave labor, so we need tariffs to "level the playing field," whatever that means.

China has never not had tariffs on American goods coming in.

MAGA really does not believe this, especially when it comes to free trade.

Do you think cost to land any given product doesn't matter? Why are we beholden to a foreign trade partner for critical goods like energy and pharmaceuticals?

Beholden is dishonest framing.

I must have missed something.

What happened that led you to believe that simple truth is lost on JD Vance?

The covid era clearly revealed how truly vile China is. We should disengage from them and treat them like the adversary they are.

This is where currency can lag or jump. The value is in the eye of the buyer/seller/trader.
