re: Why does this simple truth get lost on so many people (such as jd Vance?)

If supporting freedom (aka capitalism) is now called "Idealism" by MAGA, that says a lot.

The argument relates to predatory trade and operations to disadvantage competition. The Chinese trade game is to artificially undercut prices by whatever means -- subsidies, labor practices, slave labor, patent infringement, espionage, propaganda, currency manipulation, etc. Once a relative monopoly is achieved, pricing can be readjusted.
China is losing manufacturing market share to poorer countries because they've priced themselves out of the market.
The same pattern will follow anywhere else they do this.
quote:
Simultaneously, they rip off years of training from companies like anthropic, incorporate it into their copycat product, and promote it as their own work. Then they sell access at a price undercutting US companies, encroaching on profits of the actual innovators, and taking market share and client information as they go.
a. Stealing IP has nothing to do with capitalism or regulation. We could be even more regulated than Europe and China would steal what it can.
b. China's open source AI offerings are taken off the market once they're successful and then have no more impact on the American market. Those "undercutting" models don't remain on the open market outside of China, and once they're removed, they have no affect on US products (as US consumers can't use the previously-free Chinese offerings).
c. The US is producing a ton of open source models itself that can have the same undercutting effect AND they remain in our markets. I think NVidia has several options and I believe the Facebook AI will be free.

So “the country” takes precedent over individual decisions/freedom?
The more relevant point today is that countries have used tariffs against the US as revenue sources for decades, so those countries benefit in addition to their citizens, and that skews things.

Look at our economy compared to theirs. Look at our economic growth compared to theirs. Why would you want to follow their model?

Assumption not in evidence

Even larger assumption not in evidence
This is the classic thinking of a socialist, where all the benefits of a more free, capitalist society aren't giving credit to that free, capitalist society, and they believe that by using government to tweak the system they can improve it, ignoring the lack of government is why it's doing so well compared to the competitors.

...why?
Here is a list of open source AI models you can use today
It's only going to get more robust as we move on.
There are plenty of tutorials online to show you how to run them.
I vibe coded my own LPM (with integrated calendar, CRM, Clients, Matters, Tasks, Invoicing, Accounting, IOLTA accounting, real-time analytics/reports.) over a year ago. I pay $0 monthly for that LPM.
The fact that you're ignorant to all of this, while not shocking, doesn't mean I'm ignorant to all of this.

Again, China is stealing this information. In a more leftist, regulated system, they would steal the information.
Unless this is 7D checkers and the plan is to devolve our economy so badly we no longer produce products/tech worth stealing.

What? They're certainly offered outside China.
Beijing is looking at curbing overseas access to China's top AI models, sources say

At the meetings, led by China's Ministry of Commerce, participants discussed putting limits ?on the most advanced AI models — both closed-source and more open versions, according to two of the sources.

quote:False. Value of their theft is in its resale. With no resale, the theft has far less value, is far less incentivized, and would then be far less committed. Inclusion of stolen merchandise or intellectual property in a "free market", as an "equal competitor" at a cheaper price encourages more theft, and allows thieves to prosper.
Again, China is stealing this information. In a more leftist, regulated system, they would steal the information.
Restrictions on theft, or restrictions in dealing stolen goods and intellectual property, which you oddly term "leftist," disincentivize the activity.

I don’t.
I want to force them to play on a level field.
Sorry I didn’t use anything high brow as a lead-in, like “assumption not in evidence”.

Why would a more regulated US market prevent global resale?

Those already exist. Nobody is claiming Chinese IP theft is legal

No, my argument is to use the same tariffs against those who’ve gained unfair advantage, to force them to drop their tariffs. And that’s what’s been done in some cases during this administration.

Meanwhile, folks like yourself turn a blind eye as long as you can get the stolen material real cheap. You oddly call any restrictions on that process "socialist," or "leftist."
