I'm fully aware of the "everyone has done worse" scenario.

But look at the chart. The point is, that in terms of currency valuation, everyone has not done worse.

Are we going to pretend that QE never happened, nor the Fed buying treasuries?
You would pose that QE was (A) an international effort to manipulate our currency, rather than a domestic effort to limit the extent and repercussions of recession, and (B) that QE was not undertaken in the same manner (or even more extensively) by other economies?

OK. We can go to war with them.

A woman continually shoplifts from a store. The manager calls the police on each occasion. They arrive after the fact, and after the perpetrator has departed. They say they'll look into it. But nothing happens.

The process repeats itself over and over. Finally the store hires its own security officer. In your assessment, when that security officer catches the woman shoplifting, he should shoot her in the head. That is absurd. Obviously there are measures well short of that which can be undertaken. For example, detaining her until the police arrive, and can take her into custody.

There are options in the Chinese instance, far short of war, which can be, and have been undertaken. You don't like those actions. You think China should be able to continue their behavior undeterred. I don't.

What? How?

Purposefully design a system to suppress input and labor costs to undercut industry in developed free market economies for production of damn near everything with State owned industry. This includes creating choke points for necessary goods Ie pharma and creating what’s essentially a monopoly on anything manufactured.

The government then controls the capital from their trade surplus and it can then be used for State, political initiatives that are adversarial to these same countries. Also, we’ve given them a huge amount of leverage through our dependence on their goods.

This isn’t a commentary on the USD, tariffs, etc. More of just showing how their strategy was designed to take advantage of free market western economies to strengthen their position both politically and militarily. This can only be accomplished through communist control.

Free trade types see this as getting the cheapest goods so yay.

I see it as us basically funding the CCP to build their military, buy US assets and frick with us all the time.

ETA: if Germany undercut the 1930’s auto market in Europe selling Volkswagens and used the proceeds to build tanks…how good would those cheap Volkswagens look in hindsight?

At the same time, the WTO has demonstrated impotence, or deliberate unwillingness, to pursue trade secret protection, counterfeiting, online piracy, and technology transfer practices in China.

Probably because the CCP uses the money from their trade surplus to pay them and everyone else off.

Do people not realize where the money is coming from for all of the Belt and Road Initiatives?

Valuation isn't whats important demand is.

I'm not sure what you're getting at here. There's no reason it cannot be both.

I don't think I"ve ever claimed the US was the only currency manipulator?

I don’t have his diplomas on the wall.
But freedom to have an exchange seems more important than its result.

I would like the free market absolutist’s perspective on this market critique…

Just because markets are good for buyers and sellers, it doesn’t mean they are good for the product… and increasingly, WE are the product.
