The actress playing Sally Hemings is certainly fine.

Sam Neill sighting. This ties in nicely with the Sam Neill appreciation thread in the Movie / TV forum.

That was started by the Federalist party when he was Adams VP and running for President against Adams. Mud slinging was as bad then as now. Some say the most bitterly fought election in our history. There were no agreed upon boundaries between acceptable rhetoric and straight up slander. Very similar to today. Until Trump, we haven’t seen nothing quite like the election of 1800.

Federalist Yale College President Timothy Dwight said that if Jefferson won the election “The Bible would be cast into a bonfire, our holy worship changed into a dance of Jacobin frenzy, our
wives and daughters dishonored, and our sons converted into the disciples of Voltaire and the dragoons of Marat.”

It was during this campaign that rumors spread that the slave woman Sally Hemmings, had borne Jefferson’s children.

Of course, the Republicans gave as good as they got, claiming and fear mongering that Adams was an avowed Monarchist, warmonger, plutocratic and an agent of the crown who would saddle the nation with political slavery. They called him a fat, toothless old man.

And 225 years later, we are back to square one.

Are you asserting that most interracial sex in 1860 was between free blacks and whites?

Lmao

Slave masters were absolutely having sex with their slaves.

No. I’m just not making a fallacious argument that the existence of biracial people prior to the civil war necessitated such relationships.

That was your dumb, Rubio-dick-sucking mouth.

Even if true, so what? If false, so what? Did Jefferson author the Bill of Rights - yes. Was he Sec of State to Washington - yes. Was he Third President? Yes.

Did he shtoop a slave girl? Who knows????? Doesn't matter one way or another.

Did you not see Ken Burns documentary?Did you see how much of the documentary involved their relationship? Why is it so important to those on the left to sensationalize this relationship?

C'mon,I think you know the answer

More made up "black history"

Looks like the father of her kids was more than likely his "simple" brother who was known to party and "hangout" in the slave quarters.

Why can't journalist and "historians" do the slightest bit of research rather than go with their own narratives?
One would need to explain the Paris pregnancy. There are a litany of possibilities, but it's a major anchor of of the TJ-lecher thesis.

All reports from the time describe her as practically white in appearance, with most saying she could have easily passed as white. She was like a quadroon or whiter.

Still very serious doubts surround these 200+ year old salacious allegations. We’ll likely never know the truth.

Now THIS is racist! There were thousands of free black people in the colonies, not to mention people of mixed race from the Canary islands, hispaniola, etc...that came to the Colonies

Does it keep you up at night? Do you think any less of Jefferson one way or another? Does Ken Burns and what he said really matter?. What if he did? Xoes it take away from the fact that he was the pre-eminent intellectual force in the Revolution?

I started a thread about this a few months ago. The History Channel was running hard with the lie.

Here is Reubaltaich's reply in my thread.
quote:

The huge lie was/is that Thomas Jefferson fathered several children with Sally Hemmings.

The rumor was given legs by a 'journalist' in TJs day because this person felt that TJ screwed him out of some money that he was owed.

Of course, TJs political enemies took the story and ran with it.

The false narrative was revived in the late 1990s when Bill Clinton was caught in a scandal with a WH intern, Monica Lewinski.

The American hating left used the false TJ/SH rumor as some sort of 'moral equivalence' to justify their little hero Billy boy Clinton.
If TJ had an affair with SH, what's wrong with Bubba diddying with Lewinski.

The left based their false accusation on a now DEBUNKED article in a 1998 Nature article. The article falsely stated that DNA evidence 'proved' that TJ fathered children with Hemmings.

The story that is NOT known by many is that the magazine Nature retracted their false story a few months later.

Subsequent DNA tests proved that TJ was NOT the father of any of Hemmings children.

It is now believed that TJs brother, Randolph, had several flings with Hemmings and was most likely one of the fathers of Hemmings children.
Its also highly likely that one of TJs nephew had some romps with Hemmings too.

I heard about the brother years ago. From what the historians I heard discuss of the brother he liked to drink, play music, and hang out at the slave quarters. Upon hearing that, I knew the odds were he was the father of Hemings offspring. Johnson new this too, but that wouldn’t be nearly as good of a story.

Yes, that’s certainly quite true.

And then there’s the free blacks, especially in cities like New Orleans.

The whole culture was more nuanced than people think. “Taking liberties” was certainly done, but when you put attractive (and/or simply available) black women in close proximity to wealthy and powerful white men, coercion was not usually necessary.
