I don't have a problem with Trump's idea, even though I can see all the ways it can go wrong. This is a vexing problem.
Finding the right solution is not easy.
At its core we have to find a way to incentivize better education and strip power from the entities that are destroying education.
The core of my plan for K-12 is to make all costs for private school or homeschool deductible from your final taxable income, after the other deductions and adjustments. Also, for homeschool, if you teach your kid 200 days per year, 1-3hrs per day, you get a $50 credit per day, and if 4hrs or more it's $100 per day, that adds to the tax deductible amount. Teaching your kid part time would lead to a $10k per year additional deduction, and teaching full time would be $20k per year. No requirement to teach 200 days per year, I just use that for the sake of making the math easy for illustration purposes. But, a 200 day school year is very easy if you don't take all of the holidays.
Get kids out of public schools via incentive. This will prompt local and state voters to demand less funding for public schools and then we'll see those dollars go elsewhere and teachers and administrators won't be indoctrinating kids.

This is up there with flying cars and freedom cities. More big government.

It would be a website that aggregates the thousands (maybe millions) of already online courses.
It's really sad how many people don't realize you can take university courses online for free, even to the point of doing an entire degree's worth of work from places like Harvard, Yale, etc.

I don’t see how this could cost more than a fraction of providing “free” education at brick and mortar schools.
Wait until everyone learns how much they're on the hook for "forgiving" 50 billion in government-backed loans.

Trump could force families making over $50k annually to donate two Thanksgiving turkeys per year and he'd still have his people defending him.
This idea is among the worst.
He wants a mill for future government employees. Graduates from unamerican academies need not apply.

He's taking the 'college should be free' issue away from the dems.

Get government out of education—at all levels.

So you think the very people that would benefit from this would vote someone in, that would undo it, after in benefits them?

This is among the worst ideas he has ever come up with.
He's angling to de-woke grads, then award them federal jobs.
All while he axes existing wokes in the federal workplace.
I applaud the goal, but it seems the concept of a centralized American online U, with a direct conduit to federal jobs, has 99 ways to go wrong for every singular chance it could go right.

Dems wouldn't undo it. Bernie Sanders and Warren just masturbated to this press release.

Exactly.
Step 1. Fire a ton of gov employees.
Step 2. Program new crop of MAGA men.
Step 3. Replaced fired employees with MAGA men.

If this gives people the opportunity to get a college education for free from a recognized institution, then I’m all for it. LSU fricking you on fees? Take the class at the American University. CSU trying to hit you up for out of state tuition? Spend the first couple of semesters at the American University until you establish residency.
Because the federal government is known for providing a more preferable, cost controlled and efficiently run option.
You're essentially endorsing the baseline idea that the federal government has an obligation to be a facilitator of providing free college education. It's a win for the Democrat agenda. It's the other side of the same coin. It grants credibility to the idea that government should fund free tuition.
Even if you think this is a good idea under Trump (it's not), Democrats will eventually get their hands on it and with the framework already existing, it'll be massively expanded into a complete boondoggle for leftist academia. Give an inch, they'll take 600 miles. I don't want to go anywhere near this heaping turd of an idea and Trump should be roundly ridiculed for it.

Democrats would immediately undo that when they retake power and repay Harvard.
what they would do is make the American Academy 10x more liberal than the poli board this Cal Berkeley is and then continue to place those grads in government

Trump is 1000x better than Biden and any other demoncrat or RINO but this is just a silly idea.

Nothing but a boomer Democrat. Always has been.

I can't imagine Bubba and Luanne, sporting their political science degrees from American Academy, would make for enticing candidates in the private sector. You've just created lifetime gov employees.

Finally a place to put his library.
Virtually, of course.
Virtually, of course.

sigh. and yet this guy has a cult that will eat this up.

How is this any different from what Democrats do.
But then, Trump is a Democrat. He’s just your kind of Democrat-he makes fun of the right people.

Bubba and Luanne?
Bubba and Luanne are the very good folks who eat lunch at the tables you serve, and respect your work enough to leave you a nice tip.

I don't see anything wrong with taxing elite university endowments.
