Now this I can support. The question is, can colleges still make the same amount of money without offering scholarships? I'd say yes. Yes because of traditions.

The history of sports in the US is fascinating. We know a LOT about sports in this country all the way back to the 1880s. Why? Because they were covered by the press. Some people bought newspapers just for the sports.

As a result, sports leagues see the media as their oxygen. And now, the sports media is to the left of the NYT opinion section. If the NFL doesn't say and do things to please the hard left media they will get skewered on sports shows that now have waaaay more time on TV than they have content to fill it.
Remember, journalists are lazy. If there is nothing new to talk about just keep repeating what a racist Drew Brees is until someone else says something offensive.

The XFL needs to compete with the NFL during the same season. They can be the non-virtue signaling football league and give consumers a choice.

There was a league that did compete in a limited way with the NFL. They competed for talent and had pretty decent ratings and were hitting their revenue targets. They did this by keeping costs low and avoiding competing for viewers with the entrenched NFL. They saw themselves as supplementary to the NFL like college football as opposed to direct competitors.
Then the league did an abrupt about face. They chose to do what you suggested and moved games from spring to fall to compete head to head with the NFL. The league then swiftly folded because while there is no substitute for the NFL. ESPN did a 30 for 30 about it back in 2009 - Who killed the USFL? The answer is super ironic...

I won't argue that but their is at least some tie to the university for us alums.

I do not and never will have any connection to any professional sports team. Especially when they fleece taxpayers to build their stadiums and can just up and leave when the city does not cave to their demands.

My consumption of pro sports and sports in general has steadily declined as I have gotten older and I do not see that changing.

I am not alone in this either.

Neither is the XFL or AAF. I would say top level college football is better than either of those leagues. Also the highest paid player in the XFL doesn't make a tenth of what just an average NFL player makes. They were never competition.

Yep. I said the same on the MSB thread on a similar topic.

Sports is just a distraction and the Rona crisis has shown us how unimportant sports and celebrities are.

They provide no real value to society and are entitled virtue signalers.

That is an excellent point. Now that you say it, it's a point that I didn't see but was staring me right in the face.

It is a fun game to watch.

Over the last 5 or so years I've been progressively watching less and less NFL and more CFB. I don't see that trend changing. In fact I see a major drop in my viewership on Sundays this fall. I just bought a new boat so I'll be spending a lot more time on the water on Sundays this fall not having to worry about all the virtue signaling bull shite.

The problem is all this SJW virtue signaling junk is going to come down to CFB. Heck in some areas it might even get down to the high school level. Don't think for a second you aren't going to see players taking a knee on the sideline and making other statements. CFB is going to become just as political as the NFL.

I agree with the one idea. Bring the purity back to CFB. Stop making CFB the NFL Developmental League. Stop all scholarships for all sports. You go to a university and they have a football team, basketball team, baseball team, you go for open tryouts. Have real STUDENTS actually representing the school on the field, not mercenaries just trying to get to the NFL, NBA or MLB.

History and Tradition matters in CFB. Fans will still show up and might even show up more if it became pure again. Yes we would have to accept an overall lower quality of play but I think most fans would be okay with that.

Oh, I stopped watching the NFL many years before anthem kneeling. I've been a college fan because of the intensity of each individual game.
In the NFL if you lose you first 3 games it means nothing. Win the majority and you're in the playoffs.

In college, if you lose your first 2 games the coach might get fired.

I'd say the USFL would have survived quite well during the fall season if the NFL was virtue signaling during that time and the USFL offered a different political take for the football consumer.

And the larger the playoff bracket the greater the opportunity for a fluke outcome. Especially since it is a single elimination playoff

i will watch and attend college games

f the NFL. may they all crash and burn and every single one loses their asses.

other pro sports do not allow this kneeling BS.

quote:

black college athletes in general kneeling this fall.

when that happens they will be booed inti oblivion and revenues will drop. you think AD's will allow this shite like NFL oligarchy has? you think universities can afford that? universities have not allowed any of this up til now. players do not come out for anthem.

When is this kneeling supposed to happen? In the locker room? because that's where players are when the anthem is played in college.

Directly compete with the NFL and I think the NFL would be surprised just how many fans might leave.

USFL tried this exact plan and failed. The essential problem is that the quality of play dips dramatically when you get past the top first say 1200 players. In particular at the skill positions.

If these players are punished you will see the mob destroy these universities. There will be demands for coaches to be fired (look at Kirk Ferentz, I don't think he's going to be the Iowa coach much longer) and all those fans will be called racists and doxxed.

Fat Bastard who do you think runs these universities? University Presidents are some of the most liberal people in the country. It wouldn't shock me if University Presidents order the investigation into any fan who boos the black players. If they boo and they are a season ticket holder, boom, season tickets are revoked.

The University Presidents are going to support the black players on this even if it ultimately destroys the Athletic Department and the Football Program. Remember many of these University Presidents as well as many Deans and Professors see college athletics as evil, especially college football. They would love to see college athletics and college football go away at their university.
