Funny thing, the vast majority of those white people who are "fortressing" just want to live in safe areas where their tax money is used properly. Thru were forced into that position
Even here, these narratives about migration from crime-ridden cites that focus solely on race are B.S.
At least in Birmingham, middle class blacks are moving to suburban neighborhoods to escape the squalor and crime of the inner city.
“Black Flight” is as real as “White Flight” as Birmingham’s “Over-The-Mountian” suburbs saw an influx of blacks in the past decade or so:
Black population in Birmingham dropped over last decade, while white neighborhoods grew….
Yet safe neighborhoods and good schools— not race — is the primary motivating factor for these migration trends.
The following article is from 2011 yet this trend has only increased since then:
Birmingham changes as blacks move to the suburbs…
A Birmingham News analysis of 2010 Census numbers reveals two major patterns of city change on either side.
To the north are the shrinking cities. They form a strip of towns from Birmingham to Bessemer that lost population, both white and black, in the past decade. Those nine cities lost 20 percent of their white population and 12 percent of their black population from 2000 to 2010, a total loss of nearly 40,000 residents.
To the south are the growing cities -- a blanket of towns stretching from the top of Red Mountain in Jefferson County to the far reaches of Shelby County.
Those 17 cities all had growing black populations in the decade, and growing or stable white populations.
Rosie O'Beirne, an anthropologist at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, said metro Birmingham's pattern matches the national trend of increasing diversity in the suburbs.
"It's really middle-class flight, not black flight or white flight," O'Beirne said. "Historically blacks and whites have been segregated in Birmingham, and a lot of that had to do with racism. We're in an era where racial ideology doesn't have the same effect as it once did. You have a rising middle-class population."
Latarsha Clark is one of those who has left Birmingham to make a new home in the Rocky Ridge area near Hoover and Vestavia Hills. On a recent Friday, while shopping in Alabaster, she said she couldn't be happier with the change.
"We love the area and the schools," she said.
Clark's 9-year-old son, Cordarrius Anderson, is thriving at Gresham Elementary School, where, Clark said, the teachers work one-on-one with the children. "I love it," she said.

“Fortressing” is what they did to the Capitol after J6. St. George is just trying to keep their tax dollars local.

If anyone hasn’t noticed there is alot of support on college campuses for blacks excluding whites from their lives and living and society. If whites chose whites over blacks it’s racism. If blacks choose blacks over whites it’s culturalisim
Blacks make up like 10-14% of the US. They don’t get the same as those who make up 50-75% except for what the constitution guarantees gi all in the same percentage.

How is St. George taking away residents from East Baton Rouge Parish? I didn’t realize they were creating a new parish.

So why is it always whites that are wanting to leave? Maybe they should study the root cause of this rather than just bitching incessantly about "not fair"!

Meanwhile, sites like yahoo celebrate stories of American black folk fleeing to Mother Africa to live in a wonderland, supposedly free of supposed racism.

Yet liberals can gentrify decaying urban areas, which, by economics, isolates the impoverished.

Exactly. Bham isn’t experiencing white flight. It is experiencing flight, at least with respect to families with kids. Black families can see the problems and seek out a better situation just like white families. Shocking I know.

these secessions perpetuate modern-day segregation and limit opportunity for left-behind communities
I didn't realize that there was a Berlin Wall around St. George keeping people from moving in.
Plain and simple, people who have never stepped foot in Louisiana outside of the French quarter should keep their traps shut when trying to comment on something they have no idea about.
This would be like someone from Botswana commenting on districting of local New York boroughs.

Inner city communities refuse to be responsible partners. In those cases, divorce is the rational response.

By an AA state rep that later became the AA mayor that refused to aide or correct the non BR citizens concerns.
This crap writes itself.

Disappointed. I thought this article was going to list the best “white fortresses in the south”.

“Depleting” resources? Motherfricker, BR was blatantly stealing from St George to balance their own budget.

A new phenomenon that we literally just made up

why would Baton Rouge want a bunch of racists there?
Might as well separate. Kick out the deplorables and let them have their own city.
