They fired rockets up through the triangle and the smoke bombs and got some serious data. You don't dig or drill on Skinwalker Ranch or bad things happen.
My theory is that millions of years ago an alien or interdimensional craft crashed into mesa and is buried deep there. It became a base for the aliens and the weird phenomena there is caused by interdimensional portals and creatures passing through those portals.
