Likely voters who live in 69 battleground House districts across the country narrowly prefer Democratic candidates, according to a new Washington Post-Schar School survey, a potentially worrying sign for Republicans given that the overwhelming percentage of these districts are currently in GOP hands.

With just a month to the midterm elections and with early voting set to begin in many states, the new poll highlights the challenge for Republicans as they seek to maintain their House majority at a time when President Trump’s approval rating remains below 50 percent despite sustained economic growth, low unemployment and a rising stock market.

The survey of 2,672 likely voters by The Post and the Schar School at George Mason University shows that likely voters in these districts favor Democrats by a slight margin: 50 percent prefer the Democratic nominee and 46 percent prefer the Republican. By way of comparison, in 2016 these same districts favored Republican candidates over Democratic ones by 15 percentage points, 56 percent to 41 percent.

in this political climate, what republican wants to admit to some stranger that they are not voting for a democrat?

Do people really lie to pollsters to any noticeable degree? I doubt it.

Politics is local. Not an amalgamation of averages between “toss up” districts. Remember that in November.

Bad omen for the Dems, factoring in the last election. I keep trying to tell you, there's a helluva lot of Dems out there that pull that R level on election day. How do so many Rs get elected if they don't?

I would feel badly for Democrats right now if they weren't generally such terrible people.

Exactly. Most Republicans probably just want to be left the hell alone.

A poll is a poll is a poll but non democrats are smart enough to not answer their phones unless it is on their contact list.

It will be really interesting to see what happens in reality against the polls this go around.

I know lots of people won’t talk about their votes anymore and the political landscape is shifting so drastically now that it has to be quite hard to pick an accurate sample.

What do they do for the efficacy of modern political polling?

If I answer the pollster I NEVER tell them who I'm voting for. I usually ask them to tell me who is sponsoring the poll (most of the time they tell me they don't know) and then I ask for the list of candidates on the ballot for each office.

If I answer their question, I almost always tell them I favor the most obscure candidate on the ballot, like the Green Party or the American Nazi Party.

But, frankly, most of the time I just tell them I don't respond to political polls.
