I was watching a documentary on DNA and Genetics and why people behave the way they do. They spoke about a striving gene searching for something better.

They used immigrants to the US in the early period of the country, who left Europe yearning for a better life. They then passed that gene to their decedents who sold what they had, bought a wagon and hit the Oregon Trail.

So what happened to that gene? How did they become so socialist? California its probably the Latin influence where for centuries they were under the rule of the Spanish and then various and sundry dictators.

But the PNW when and why did they become such wusses when their ancestors were bad arse mountain men?

Immigration Reform and Control Act passed by Ronald Reagan in1986

Amnesty for fricking illegals, there's you problem.

They're just here to pick the crops, now take a look.

The best of them dragged the weak ones along in wagons.

Then the hardy ones got sick and died of dysentery right before they arrived.

I spent almost 20 years of my life in the PNW. The mountain men are still there, they just do not spend time in the cities. The raw beauty of that region provides a satisfaction that can not be described.

Hence, when you remove 5, maybe six of the metro areas of the PNW, you have a population of people left who are more than willing to do what is right for the good of the people and their country.

It is a night and day difference between the metro and small town or country folks that live there.

With no more frontier to conquer, maybe the striving gene is focused on mediocrity and socialism? No denying that the PNW and Cali are strong in that desire.

Probably just the lazy gene has become dominant however.

Oregon, CA, and WA still have bad arse mountain men who are conservative, gun loving outdoors guys.

They just mostly don’t live near the population centers.

There are few men in Seattle and Portland.

These were not immigrants.

These were settlers. There is a huge difference between settlers and immigrants.

Settlers walk into the wild country with no civilization with nothing but their brains and what they can carry and build civilization from scratch.

Immigrants move into an existing civilization and have all of the advantages of it as a given.

Only the toughest, smartest, and most determined people are settlers.

America was built by settlers NOT immigrants.

It’s the same thing with New England: wealthy, secular, and highly educated people who have a guilt complex and feel the need to virtue signal

i would suggest that your understanding of history is that of a child, and the notion of some sort of "striving" gene is ridiculous on it's face.

you should start from there and work backwards.

It's not the descendants of the men and women that strived to get there. They are not the problem. It's the millions that follwed once the west was tamed. Especially the ones that wanted to be in pictures.

Friend,

It is an interesting question. I would suggest there is not a “survivor gene” stronger in some than others and the move of the West Coast to more liberal tendencies in the last century has to do more with actual population changes there and the populace’s reaction to world events, namely, when immigrants access to public health care was cut off in the 80s.

If someone has a book they could recommend on the history of the political shift on the West Coast, please leave the recommendation here.

Another interesting change of the years is the South’s radical transformation from a society that values manners, civility and hospitality to one of self-centeredness. You can see it on the roads as well, in how people dress, and in rise of the HOA and gated communities. The core social values, at least romanticized as Southern from a century ago, are entirely different from what the average Southerner values today. Drive in the PNW for one month and then return to the South and you will recognize that PNW drivers do not speed, are cautious, and are courteous. Southern drivers, on the other hand, drive without abandon. As a general rule they do not respect the speed limit. It is a subtle cultural difference that reveals more than one would expect.

In all my travels I find the most hospitable Americans live in New York, which was surprising to me. They are the best of America at this moment in time.

Yours,
TulaneLSU

Actually the ones with the gene went as far as Wyoming, Colorado, Montana, Dakotas and stayed there.

Colorado has turned blue because many people from blue stats have moved there in the last 25 years. It also has larger population centers.

The ones who are socialist moved to California in the last 100 years.

Anyways, I wouldn't go by the gene 100%. More of a person's behavior comes from who they hang around with.

You hang around dogs, you get fleas.

Interesting question. I’m sure you’ll get plenty of uninformed answers and emotional opinions from members who are certain they know.

Even your question is loaded.

But we are here to discuss and we are entitled to our opinions. Thank you.

I hope everyone has a joyous Sunday.

It is the urban environment that has created this issue.

And, it is in every single urban city.

There was a lot of Post WWII movement from the urban areas of the Midwest and Northeast to California. Anti War protesters would get pulled out of cars and get beaten in even the 1960s by descendants of that early migration in SoCal.
