re: So are we ever going to do anything to stop AI stealing jobs and Data Center resource use?

Sure, but AGI combined with robotics could take everyone’s jobs. That’s his point.
And what's the alternative?
Saying no to AI is like refusing to enter the industrial age. Other nations will and we will be left behind. Quite quickly.

we are the horses in this.
not the tradesmen.
We can't be the horses in your analogy because your analogy states that horses can't vote and aren't citizens and we're all citizens that can't vote.
You misread the post. Just try again instead of trying to save your mistake.

No we definitely shouldn’t say no to it. I agree with you.
There are no easy answers.

Tell us concrete steps you have taken to prepare for the onslaught of AI.

AI is replacing the work done by humans.
Engines do the work done by the horse.
Politician should care more because in the current situation, there are a lot more horses. a huge percentage of our country are the horse in this scenario

Absolutely silent from both sides as we roll towards the greatest assault on the middle class in history.
There’s no silence.
If anything, white collar jobs are more at risk than blue collar.
AI may end up providing automation that currently requires tasks and analysis that subject matter experts would typically provide. This doesn’t mean it will replace judgment calls and decision making.
The challenge will be developing new talent to have the 30,000 feet decision making skills and experience of having once been on the ground in their industry. That is, how does someone know how to make the decisions if they haven’t done the grunt work that AI will replace?
I’m sure the workforce will adapt. It always has. We just don’t know what it will look like.

Did people make the horse carriages?

yes
but people weren’t the horse carriages
which is why this is worse

This is about what... the eighth "single greatest issue facing us"?
How many "single greatest issues" are there?
Every day, seems like a new one is added to the list of "single greatest issues".

Trump talked about the effects of data centers in his speech 12 hours ago. He is pushing tech companies to build their own power stations.

The boomers here will say that if ai takes your job just walk up to the boss man and give him a firm handshake and ask for a new job

I LOVE how you dodged the Democrats refusing to place the needs and wellbeing of American's own citizens over illegals.

I love AI. It has amazing power to transform society for the better.

Most people don’t even know how big this will be, because the people in power have an incentive to not even point to it. It’ll be like a light switch flipped on in a couple years and that shite will hit the fan quickly.
and i'm supposed to believe you do?

If by better you mean consolidate power and wealth into the hands of very few then sure.
It will be the 99% on UBI and the 1% masters.
What I saw two weeks ago showed me that engineers, which is me, lawyers, a lot of Dr's, and most other upper middle and lower upper class will be out of work in 5 years with no where to turn. This segment of the US makes up roughly 70% of the gdp/economy in this country. We will see the great depression on a larger scale quickly followed by mass consolidation of assets by a few corporations/individuals.

Let’s just bail on AI and let the Chinese develop it. That will work out well.

It’s the rich and Powerful vs the rest of us.
The “us” are the ones who don’t hold them accountable for these seemingly obvious consequences down the road.
You know why… because we are too busy arguing over culture wars like high schoolers.
Dario Amodei, the CEO of AI company Anthropic, has explicitly predicted that artificial intelligence could drive unemployment to 10% to 20% within the next one to five years.
You don’t like the idea of 20% unemployment…. Here’s some outrage bullshite to keep you occupied…

quote:I'm awfully curious how you think it would do so. Even if you assume companies themselves won't materially reinvent themselves with technological gains, they will be able to operate with far fewer employees. Back office roles are already getting slaughtered
No. The economy will evolve with the new technology
The white collar displacement will be catastrophic. Roles will exist but they will be fewer and fewer in number, and any gains you make in skillset in another role can be wiped out overnight. We used to joke about fired journalists needing to "learn to code" - but that's not even an option for them now, because AI can do so much better
quote:Train conductors could get other jobs in transportation and aviation brought their own careers
This is like saying we need to do something about airplane manufacturers because putting the train conductors out of work
AI is going to decimate everyone. This isn't even a question, we're barely scratching the surface. And even if your role is seemingly immune, if we hit ~15% unemployment, you're still fricked, because society won't make it
