Quotes are usually twisted and made to sound like what the person repeating them wants to push, but man did they look bad. "I wanted this to be about me" or whatever (I'm paraphrasing) when you are not only representing your country, but also on a team is a tough, tough look.

It's not Simone's fault. This option of "quitting" has been provided to her by society. This is a systematic acceptance of letting inevitable failures derail your life and goals, brought on by irresponsible adults.
As recent as 5 years ago, this shite would have never happened, now it's going to be commonplace for young athletes to crumple under pressure and be praised for it. It really has nothing to do with politics.

There were reports that at one point she had to have one of her legs wrapped. So, not 100% certain she wasn't fighting some sort of injury even if she says she's not injured.
Any politician that was not financially benefiting from the war wanted us out of there.

Mainly just us. Most of the other athletes are proud to represent their countries. We just happen to have some athletes that are very vocal in their hatred of their own country.
Imagine being so privileged you can publicly talk about your hatred of your own country, yet represent that country on the world stage and see nothing wrong with it.
