Swimming is awesome and they are some of the best athletes at the games.
These "real sports" you are referencing almost certainly haven't given medals yet.

or be their parents robot. these kids are basically forced into this at such a young age that they get molded to just eat, breathe, and live the sport. gymnastics is travel ball on steroids. lets not forget its filled with complete creeps that prey on the kids all the way down to the nothing leagues around the country cutting down on said mental fortitude
being the best at a sport doesnt auto qualify into some mental giant category. no one in their right mind would call lebron some pillar of mental fortitude

We are so entrenched in our political views and focused on winning our internal fights that we are ignore national outcomes and position in the world.
Ex, U.S. education system ranks embarrassingly low relative to other similar economies in the world.
Enter a proposal to address it (pick any one of them). Instead of looking at how many engineers it will take to compete against China in a digitized world, we fight over how deep gov't will be involved, cost, etc. and never resolve the objective.
Fight ends, we move on to the next internal strife of the day, and U.S. slips even further behind relative to the world's education.
Where are we today? In 10 years, China will have twice as many Big Tech companies than U.S. does.
While we were fighting one another, China produced more engineers than we produced red-faces in our internal fighting.
They win; we lose.
We have allowed ourselves to be irreparably divided and China and others are seizing the opportunity we gave them.

I, for one, have zero faith that what is being said is truth. This young lady has been on top of her profession for several years and I find it difficult to believe that it's bothering her enough to quit now, at the very moment she's about to break open a can on the world.
Something else is going on and I bet it has something to do with her skills that no one can duplicate... the triple flip or whatever it's called.
