Speaking to one of the n.o. Churches minister and board members, the story was that churches voting to leave had to buy the property (they didn’t mention any favorable terms) and the employee pensions on a short timeline after they voted to leave.
They were of the opinion that rich congregations were the only ones who could afford to keep the church. Allegedly, Metairie and Lake Vista overwhelmingly voted to leave.

The UMC did a very poor job of handling this the whole way. Their silence was taken by many that it was conceivable some small church in the country could have a drag queen as preacher.
As protestant churches go the Methodist Church as a whole is more liberal than Baptists by a mile. But it varies on an individual church basis.
Didn't have to happen this way but sadly it did. Our church is "staying" but honestly, not one thing is changing.

Our Church likely won’t vote as our Pastor wants it to be the welcoming Church for all including those “displaced” after their Church voted to disaffiliate.

If the more liberal UMC churches that see their attendance and donations crash, begin to see that they can’t afford to keep he lights on, I’d be willing to bet that one enormous organization will, in exchange for housing and feeding a flood of migrants, print money, and through the NGOs that helped the migrants here to begin with, fill the church with the cash needed to keep the lights on.

Good luck with that.

I love how respectable this thread is. Ya'll need to remember act like this when the MSM starts (incorrectly) reporting that the Pope has changed the Catholic Church's teaching on marriage.
In all seriousness, I hate to see any Christian denomination give in to this stuff. It's bad for all of us God-fearing people who are trying to keep the insanity at bay.

The Methodist church across the street from my old house in an older part of town lost many of its congregants when it started bringing in liberal pastors.
I remember in 2008-2010 when it still filled the parking lot on Sundays. Then they brought in their first real liberal pastor. Church activities slowed and the Sunday services weren't as full. They brought in their next liberal pastor about 2017-2018. Attendance dropped even more. It finally shut down in 2021. The Catholic Church across the street bought it after that for more school space.
If you teach people that they can do anything they want as long as it is couched as "love" and that they cannot be "judged" by anyone, then they no longer need a church to go to. They have built one around themselves and their malleable morals: the church of "me."
TL/DR: Go woke, go broke.

You will become the "displaced" as more and more of the light in the loafers clan take over your church and demonize you for having a biblically based world view. Good luck.

Well, they started by having female preachers.. then devolved into gay and lesbian preachers without saying nary a word. If and SBC church tried to hire... well... actually the ones that DID try to hire women pastors.... got kicked out of the SBC with the quickness. That's what the Methodists should have done from the get-go.

quote:Can't disagree with that but the most conservative Methodist Churches are in Africa. The United Methodist Church is giving them no route to disaffiliate. Pure evil!

Roman Catholic Church headed this way

quote:Not totally true. As I posted in another, the Methodist Church holds the properties in trust. If you vote to disaffiliate, typically, you must pay 2 years in apportionments and pay unfunded pension liabilities. The pension stuff is completely fair as the pensions must be maintained. Many churches can't afford the 2 years in apportionment but it's still much less than buying the property unless you are upside on liabilities. So UMC might let you go for nothing as they don't want to assume your debt.

I'm a caveman and not Methodist. I have no idea how it all works. Just sharing some scuttlebutt which seems to be true. When you say, "Keep the Church" I think I'm saying the opposite. Maybe I'm not understanding.

If I understand correctly, the UMC is paying the African contingent and others BIG $$$ for their votes next year.

I am guessing that the liberal Methodist churches have not read Leviticus 20:13. " If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them."

quote:I wouldn't put anything past the UMC delegation. We had a Church down the street that missed the vote by only a few members. There is a group of 200 or so that meet at an Anglican Church on Sunday afternoon and are desperately trying to "plant" a Church. Two hundred leaving a single church is a huge hit. Don't care how large you are.
