And the number could grow as the December 31 deadline for leaving the denomination approaches.

quote:

A quarter of Methodist congregations in the U.S. are leaving the United Methodist Church as one of the country's largest Protestant denominations wrestles with issues of sexuality and gender identity.

More than 7,600 of United Methodist’s approximately 30,000 congregations had voted to leave as of this week, and the number could grow as the Dec. 31 deadline for departures approaches.

“It’s the biggest schism in any American denomination in the history of our country,” said Ryan Burge, an associate professor of political science at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

How do you destroy a Church?

Normalize Sin.

Two Genders and marriage is solely between 1 Biological Man and 1 Biological Woman.

If your Church can't get behind that, you are not attending a Church that GOD ordains or recognizes, period.

I live in a small desert town in Nevada. We have the usual list of churches: one Catholic, one Episcopalian, two Southern Baptist, two Lutheran, one Presbyterian, 3 Charismatic/Pentecostal, and a Methodist church. The Methodist church is BY FAR the most liberal church in town. I know a few liberal Methodists who actually left the church because it was TOO liberal.

And how many will leave the churches that don’t leave? I’d say over half if not 75%. The donation plates will dry up and the church will close.

Two local churches voted. The thriving one voted 92% to leave and the one with the gay pastor and female assistant pastor missed the vote by 2%. The progressive church then fired their popular youth pastor that was for leaving. They called him while he was volunteering at a soup kitchen.

The next week, most of the congregants that voted to leave the progressive church showed up at the church that voted to leave. Turns out that was most of the church's financial support. They are blitzing social media for year end giving. Desperation mode already.

All that to say is that I thought the schism was a bad thing, but it seems to be working out. These churches that vote to stay will not be around for much longer.

I think this 25% number is for this year only. Last year, around 40% voted to leave and this is 25% of the remaining that left this year.

LOL at the photo. Women ruin everything. Feminize ANYTHING and you destroy it. Tons of academic research on this subject, particularly the feminization of the workplace, and the results are completely unsurprising.

(edit) This is happening at the Methodist Church in Auburn, Alabama. They voted to leave, but the new church leadership is blocking the move. They are downtown and are sitting on $50mm of prime real estate (they purchased the original St Michaels I was baptized in). They were the largest congregation for probably a century. Now the largest is St Michaels.

Properly understood, if you choose the narrow path, you will encounter division.

This is actually a good thing because it separates the tares from the wheat, and so you know who is on the side of God and who is on the side of religion. I’d argue that a very similar thing is happening in other Protestant denominations, and also a gauntlet has been thrown at the feet of Catholics as well. Whom do you serve, God or religion?

It’s not about being perfect, but rather is it God’s word that’s more important to you, or is it man’s word? Whom will you serve?

These denominational breaks are a good thing. It needs to play out and give Christians more options than just the go along to get along from the past

Certainly possible, as it doesn’t matter who votes as much as who counts the votes.

But people voting with their feet seems to have brought things around.

And this is likely some of the problem…

They don’t want to have to pay the parent church for all this expensive real estate.

The parishioners? A lot of them probably wouldn’t care if they had services in a disused 7/11 like in Because Of Winn Dixie if they had to in order to escape the parent church.

The congregation has a contractually stipulated covenant to purchase the property from the parent church for an extremely low value as compared to the market price in the event of a split (e.g., $1mm vs. $50mm). So it is certainly part of the issue, but for the opposite reasons I think you proffer.

The "new" leadership is in the tank for the parent church, and for generally feminizing things up.

The stain of that apostacy is about to engulf my church. The problem for me is there is not a Global Methodist Church anywhere in western North Carolina yet.

I may have to find a conservative Presbyterian church to attend or go to a Catholic church.

Biltmore Church is a good one. I’ve visited it quite a few times and came away with a pretty good church to both attend and get involved and become an active part of the church body.
