New Orleans council faces tough choice: Raise taxes, or cut services

This fall, the New Orleans City Council faces a dilemma: They can either raise property taxes, and weather public blowback.
Or, they can keep the status quo and lose $77 million in vital city programs and services — a move that will also likely cause public pain.
Three weeks into the city's annual budget process, council members are largely keeping mum about which choice they’ll make, even as they vow to preserve funding for several priorities. But it’s increasingly obvious that they’ll need new cash if they hope to keep those services alive.

A full “millage roll forward,” which occurs when property taxes are raised to the highest amount allowed by voters, could inject about $42 million more into the city’s coffers. But without that increase, the mayor and council will have to close a roughly $100 million deficit by cutting $77 million in city programs and services as proposed by Moreno’s administration. Also helping to bridge that gap are $22 million in one-time funds, plus another $3 million the city will receive from a trust that governs revenue from donated oilfield land.
Even if the millage is rolled forward, the city and council would still have to cut services to the tune of about $32 million, assuming no new other funds are found.

How much federal money did the city just turn down again? And they did that because they would have to cooperate with ICE? Hmmm.

Cut the worthless "services" and 10% more per year until they have a budget surplus.

The total operating budget is 1.47 billion.
Any second year Economics student could go line by line and find 5% to cut out of the budget. But holy fricking shite lets avoid "public" pain at all cost. And by public they mean the people not paying taxes.

Im sure theyll make those cuts as painful as possible. Nobody in a do nothing good old boy bureaucratic position will see their budget cut by a single dollar but the guys who pick up your trash or repair your potholes are gonna disappear.

Does New Orleans even need a City Council? Look at how corrupt and ineffective they are.
Let's start cutting there first.
Then the S&WB.
NoLA is careening off a fiscal cliff don't see how it stops.

So the real answer is that they are going to end up doing both?

New Orleans City Budget
Here is the New Orleans City budget dashboard. Anybody who has ever sniffed a P&L or Balance Sheet could cut 10% off of that and not blink. But thats not what they really want.

I would pushback and say most of them aren't corrupt. That's about all

Before cutting services, drastically reduce the politicians and government employees salary.
Then if needed, cut services. Only raise taxes if, after doing the above, there is no other option.

You have to actually have services in order to cut them. What they really mean is cut no-show and no-work jobs.

The crook tax assessor increased property values just a year or two ago for everyone that isn't related to him. Or sitting on City Council.
Hey Mayor, don't pay your buddy Joe G $300,000 to be CAO. Let's start there.
ETA: Reminding everyone that our trash service was already cut 50% after Ida with no service cost reduction.
