Nearly 1 in 3 US physicians were born abroad

Nearly 1 in 3 US physicians were born abroad December 5, 2018
by Marie Mccullough

At a time when immigration is a hot-button issue, the American health care system is highly dependent on professionals born in other countries, an analysis of U.S. census data shows.

In 2016, roughly 17 percent of professionals in 24 medical fields—from optometrists to chiropractors to veterinarians—were foreign-born, and almost 5 percent of them were not U.S. citizens, according to the analysis published this week in the Journal of the American Medical Association. The analysis could not distinguish between professionals trained in their country of origin and those trained in the United States.

The rates were even higher for the most educated providers. About one in five pharmacists, one in four dentists, and 29 percent of physicians—approaching one in three—were foreign-born.

Among one of the biggest occupational groups—psychiatric, nursing and home health aides—23 percent were foreign-born.

"We rely very heavily in health care on those who were born abroad,"

Our domestic MD shortage is a product of Federal Government policies limiting numbers of US Resident training slots. Those have been in place since the Clinton Administration. The Clinton thesis was, less MDs availability equals lower access and therefore lower healthcare costs.

A side-effect was longer hours for MDs diverting further their involvement in medical administration.set up their loss of control or input when the ACA came along.

A great example of this is is the largest hospital in Charlotte recently removing board certification or even board eligibility as a requisite for practice.

Yes, it's getting bad.

I refuse to see any Dr who’s name Mahmoud, Singh, Nguyen, etc. One time they tried to trick me and I walked out of the office!

More proof that the Dems fail economics forever.

How often has reducing the supply of something lowered costs?

But all of them were born by abroad.

The trans movement is giving the phrase “born abroad” an entirely new meaning.

Well, there are 5 times as many of them as us.

figure all else being equal (which it isn't), the best out of a population 5x bigger is probably better, at least in terms of numbers of high achievers if not producing the very best

I would rather go to an Indian than an affirmative action doctor.

The shortage also has to do with the mandated female quota. It’s known among the medical profession that female physicians do not practice as long, work as many hours, or work at non-big city hospital as often as males. It is essentially a forced labor shortage in the name of equality

Jesus. If that's true, this trans-gender thing is really out of control.

Though I'm not aware of a "quota" per se, universities are self-imposing those standards.

The rest of your post is spot on.

You’re right, mandated quota may be wrong but they are trying to force the admissions to be 50/50. But as my previous post states, the hours and longevity of female physicians (on the whole) is less than male physicians.

thats what we do, but this last time, we had no choice with my wife and had to see a gastro group in tuscaloosa that was entirely docvtors from india...they were fantastic and diagnosed my wifes stomach problems that has plagued her for 40 years....american nurses and staff who were great....we still won't go to non-american doctors (except these) but sometimes this philosophy is not in our own best interests....it is the safest philosophy, though

Dear Lord. I'm not going to claim to recall, but please for the love of God tell me that Clinton didn't actually believe reducing supply would drive down costs!!

I personally tend to avoid Doctos with such names not because I dislike them or think they aren't competent but because I've had multiple experiences where I couldn't even fully communicate with them. Describing why I'd come to the doctor often felt about the same as talking to tech support on the phone to a dude named "Steve"(whose name was definitely NOT Steve)

He might have said it, now whether or not he actually believed it is another thing.

ACA screwed the industry bigly. The smart ones with specialized and the dumb ones are left treating you and me.

progressivism strikes again and ultimately kills us slowly.
