quote:

New York City socialist mayor Zohran Mamdani is facing heat on social media after his post celebrating the state’s new pied-à-terre tax on New Yorkers with a second home.

"If you have a second home in New York City worth more than $5 million, check your mailbox when you’re back in the five boroughs — because you've got mail," Mamdani posted on X, touting the tax on specific second properties introduced by New York Gov. Kathy Hochul that he supported going into effect soon.

"Today, we sent notification letters to property owners, letting them know that our new pied-à-terre tax is coming soon," Mamdani continued. "The best city in the world deserves the best parks, libraries, and schools in the world. That's only possible when we all pay our fair share. "

quote:

Mamdani’s support of the pied-à-terre tax on second homes worth more than $5 million has been a viral controversy for months and started when

In April, New York City Mayor Mamdani and Hochul unveiled the joint legislative proposal targeting luxury second homes worth $5 million or more. Known as a pied-à-terre tax, the annual surcharge is expected to generate an estimated $500 million from affluent out-of-state property owners.

Mamdani has previously said revenue from the tax would go toward initiatives such as free childcare, cleaner streets and safer neighborhoods.

Why does NY and the Mayor get so much attention? I rarely watch cable news anymore because they spend so much time talking about him or NY.

Imagine being so power hungry that you revel in taxing productive citizens.

if the exodus of high earners wasnt already happening fast enough, this should speed it up same more

Florida and Texas like the news....

EDIT:

Details on the Tax:

quote:

The pied-à-terre tax is based on that five-year average and is tiered as follows: the first $5 million of valuation is not subject to the tax; the portion of the valuation above $5 million and up to and including $15 million is taxed at 0.8 percent; the portion of the valuation above $15 million and up to and including $25 million is taxed at 1.05 percent; and the portion of the valuation above $25 million is taxed at 1.3 percent.

So a $20m house would cost:

$80k k for the 0.8% from $5m to $15m
$52,500 on the next $5m

$132,500 on a $20m home....evaluated at $20m by accessors office, not by the same government that appraised the "value" of trumps house in florida when they made up charges on him.....

zero sympathy.

I hope Mandami and his merry band of Communists give it to the citizenry of NYC good and hard.

This.

The human reaction to enacting a new tax is apologetic, with the understanding that you’re taking from other human beings. Not “Check your email, bitches!”

Any time they start throwing this phrase around... bend over and buckle up. You are about to get screwed whether you want to or not.

I enjoy the cute bragging from Mamdani, “might want to check your mailbox”. As I’m sure many NYer’s who live in million dollar homes are celebrating, the wise move would be to start calling u-haul.

Largest populated city in the country.

All of this is a reminder that NYC is the reason the Electoral College exists. The city was so large at the time of the framing of the Constitution that it could’ve overwhelmed the other 12 colonies even back then.

We should expect a mad rush of out of staters purchasing second homes in NYC so they can help make the city great.

I actually don't live there anymore, SA. And I've been around the world.
I would call Tokyo, Istanbul, Mexico City, Vienna, Barcelona greater cities than New York.
