I think it’s an overrated destination that markets itself as a flashy, extravagant city when in reality it’s all style no substance.
Then just say that.
To say it's fake and built by slaves is just trying too hard...

If wealthy Instagram influencers from Russia and the UK all of a sudden decided to stop coming to Dubai, that city would collapse in revenue.
Oh, Jason...

the sheiks will make sure iran pays. UAE is a shelter for westerners, violence will hurt that, and they invested way 2 much for the shite heads to ruin it for them
wouldnt doubt if they are funding any iranian strikes in future.

Abu Dhabi is better. It’s real money.
Abu Dhabi is Monaco to Dubai’s Vegas

American expats called them Jumeirah Janes (Jumeirah is a section of Dubai where many Americans lived in the 70's-90's). Dad dressed like one for a Mardi Gras costume party at their place.
My folks were there almost 20 years. I was there for 4 years, in jr high thru 1984. Some wild parties - jr high kids wasted off their parents' liquor cabinets (westerners could buy alcohol). One company flew in 500lbs of live crawfish from LA for a crawfish boil.
It really was remarkably safe from crime and outside attacks. Many expats stayed through the Iranian hostage crisis, Iran-Iraq war, Gulf war, etc. Many extremists know better than to bite the hand that feeds them, as some rich Gulf Arabs are thought to fund them on the down low. But Arabs never liked the Persians/Iranians (they called the Persian Gulf the Arabian Gulf).
Virtually no one steals, as they would do real time if caught. My mom was once blocked in by someone who double parked near a shopping strip. When the lady finally came out she said "well I left the key!" - she expected someone to hop in and move her car if they needed to get out.
If you're with an oilfield service company or a local company, the pay was good but not great. And there was no retirement plan. After 20 years dad got an end of service "gratuity" of less than one year's salary. And since he wasn't paying into Social Security all those years, he doesn't get a full social security check.

I mean being stuck in Dubai doesn’t seem like the worst place to be, it’s freaking awesome there
Yeah I really don't ever have any desire to see anything at all in the middle east, or ever visit there. But if I had to select one place to visit just once, it would most assuredly be the UAE/Dubai.

This reads like it was posted by the typical Louisiana resident who rarely travels outside the state.
Dubai is awesome.

Africa is awesome to visit. You have no idea what you’re missing.

It’s not like the U.S. has not been sending military equipment over left and right for the last month or so. When you hear 2 aircraft carriers are headed to the Middle East then you might want to postpone the trip.

I went to Egypt a few years ago, saw the pyramids, valley of the kings, and did scuba diving in the Red Sea. Was great. Big world out there. Cant live in a bubble.

Hayseed. Dubai has tourists, international events and business visitors all the time there. It's safer than anywhere in the US. You've a much higher chance of gun crime in the US than a bombing in Dubai. Even with a bombing, the stats don't compare.
Fckn idiot.

Dubai tries to paint this image of itself as a world class, bustling, futuristic city with so many huge skyscrapers. It tries to give off the impression that it has so many industries when in reality that’s not the case. That’s why it’s a “fake” city.
When I finished my 4 year stint in Singapore as VP of a US company, my next stop was supposed to be Dubai. That fell through because of product availability issues. A good friend there did go on to Dubai for a while (different company, neither of us in tourism but downstream oil, not production).
It’s a place a lot like Singapore. The industry and presence there is hugely driven by being the hub for the region. Execs like me live there and manage operations in the region. That’s a huge industry in and of itself.
I asked Google about occupancy rates of those commercial buildings. The reply:
quote:
Dubai's office market is experiencing an acute supply shortage with overall occupancy rates exceeding 95% in top-tier areas as of early 2026. Demand, driven by financial services and technology firms, has pushed Grade A vacancy rates below 1%, causing rental rates to increase by up to 45% year-on-year. Prime districts like DIFC, Downtown, and Business Bay are nearly fully occupied.
Key Occupancy & Market Trends (2025-2026):
Occupancy Rates: Citywide, office occupancy ranges from 92% to over 95%, with Grade A space leading at near-total occupancy (97% in some prime areas).
Demand Drivers: Rapid expansion from business services (law, HR, marketing) and technology sectors accounts for nearly 70% of demand.
Supply Shortage: A decade-long slowdown in new construction has led to a significant shortage, particularly for large, high-quality spaces.
Rental Impact: Grade A rents have seen massive increases (up to 45% YOY), making it one of the most competitive office markets globally.
Future Outlook: While 15 million sq ft of new space is planned by 2030, demand is expected to continue outpacing supply.

Possibly, it's a large continent and i'm sure there are great things about it, but there are 5 other continents i'd rather go to first. Even Antarctica. Europe may be the only other one I ever make it to and that's fine by me.

How fricking retarded does one have to be to visit the middle east and just assume it's safe?
Dubai is probably nicer and safer than every major city in the United States.

We were in the ME for 3 weeks in January it was very nice and safe. In Saudi Arabia we were mainly out in the undeveloped scenic areas for photography. In the UAE we were out at a 5 star resort in the deep desert. We did visit both Dubai and Abu Dhabi both were good.
Iran was nuts to bomb Arab states. That was crossing the Rubicon….

Was in Jordan and Israel last November. Very glad I was there. Israelis and Jordanians are extremely nice people.
The mullahs and the IRGC are the problem.

UAE as a whole hasn’t had a problem in decades until now.
Stick to your Grand Isle type destinations.
