Only net taxpayers should vote. Nothing is surprising - an unlimited democracy like we have always results in socialism. I never understood the “democratic plantation” analogy because the taxpayers are the ones doing all the work and paying all the taxes. I work 2 jobs to make ends meet.

Your argument will be that most 18 year olds are not well informed.

That's not what my argument will be.

My argument will be that 18 year olds are almost certainly inexperienced. You could say they are uninformed, I suppose, but if so, they are uninformed about the practical realities of life. What it takes to support a family. The reality of looking at one's paycheck pre-and post federal income taxes. An 18 year old has likely not ever started a business, paid all of his or her FICA taxes, and dealt with ungrateful employees or government regulations.

He or she has never had the realization standing in the checkout line at the grocery store that the person in front of her checking out with false eyelashes and six inch nails with a cart full of junk food, the newest iPhone, and five screaming children is eating on his or her dime.

I could go on, but you get the idea.

quote:

To which I would say that’s no different than an uninformed 40 year old

But it is. Because while the 40 year old may not know anything about current events, he or she does know something about the practical realities of life.

quote:

because I believe in individual rights, as opposed to your Marxist ideology of grouping people as a whole, I say let them vote at 18.

Then I suppose you also support them voting at age 5? If not, what happened to individual rights as opposed to a Marxist ideology of grouping people as a whole? Remember that old joke about the woman who wouldn't sleep with the guy for $100, but would for $10,000? We already established what you are...now we're just negotiating details.

And I don't think the Founding Fathers were Marxists, yet the system they designed—our system—was designed to work with only male landowners voting. In other words, people who had to be responsible; for themselves and also (usually) other people. That criteria eliminates all but the smallest fraction of 18 year olds in 2024 America.

IME the vast majority of 18 year olds in 2024 America have never shopped for and prepared a meal for themselves, done a load of laundry for themselves, performed a home repair of any kind, changed a flat tire, paid a bill, worked a job (or even applied for a job), advocated on their own behalf to an authority figure (teacher, principal), etc., etc., etc.

Maybe it made sense for 18 year olds to vote in 1824. Maybe it did in 1924. In 2024 you might as well take that number down to 10 or 12 or so. There's not much life experience difference between the two ages anymore.

We need all kinds of restrictions on voting rights.

1. Dead people should not vote.
2. People with end stage dementia in a nursing home should not have a ballot filled out on their behalf.
3. People who do not pay any taxes should not vote.
4. Etc

Fine, then make the age of majority 25 across the board and STFU about young adults.

So it doesnt matter to you how the property is acquired. Rich kids with no mind or care for civic duty will get to vote while poor and middle class, hell even those that are serving their country..... are shite out of luck. Got it.

I mean, there are other qualifiers as well. If you can’t pass a basic U.S. history and basic U.S. civics test, you can’t vote either.

Basically, they want to permanently wipe out Democratic voting bases.

It's such a loser mentality.

"Hey, we can never convince them that our ideas are superior, so we should just tell them they can't vote".

What a Communist idea.

The same reason only men were allowed to vote. Because, they have skin in the game. IMO, if you aren't eligible to be drafted, (women) then you shouldn't be voting for the way the country is run.

I disagree.

There are millions of voters of all ages who vote straight tickets based solely on party affiliation.

There are millions of voters of all ages who voted for Barry only because he was "black".

There are millions of dead voters of all ages who voted for the Democratic party only.

There are millions of voters of all ages who voted for decades and have absolutely zero idea of what the candidate's platform stands on.

I could go on and on, but you get the point...It's all fricking corrupt as hell my guy. There's no righting this particular ship.

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal"

A lot of people take that as created equal and stays equal at every given point in time their whole lives, no matter how many bad decisions are made

That's exactly why age isn't the right way to do this.

Are you paying anything in federal income taxes?

Are you paying more in those taxes than you're taking out in benefits?

Step right up.

But if you're not paying anything or getting more than you're giving (which is a lot of 70 year olds and almost all 18 year olds), have a seat.

I'm just saying, if you (and that's a "royal" you not you personally) want to make the minimum voting age 25, then you need to make everything else that same age to attain full legal rights.

Pffffttt…

I have started to believe that the majority of the populace shouldn’t be allowed to vote.

I will forever support that there should be some qualification or requirement met to vote. Something given without having been earned has little value.

And no public employee (at any level) should be allowed to vote.
