How is Panama messing with US shipping?

China operates it. They charge us and control when we go through. It’s not a good thing and China better hand it over.

His argument is that we built the canal, gave it to Panama, and now China is controlling it.
In his words, "We didn't give it to China. We gave it to Panama. And now we're taking it back."

Screwing over US-flagged ships. Playing hardball with the Navy on transit.
Two of the central tenants of the agreement to hand it over was that the US gets a discount and that the USN can use the damned thing when it needs to.
They aren't living up to that, and they are handing over management to a foreign government, whcih they were absolutely not supposed to do.

My personal belief is that it’s a negotiation technique. He wants them to absolutely shut down the Darian gap, lower shipping fees to the U.S. and get China the frick out. With Trump EVERYTHING is a negotiation technique.

It's also the fact it's such a critical choke hold point for American shipping that could be a major issue if they are able to arm it or bomb it during a world war.
Would be similar though not nearly quite as devastating if we had military control over a major island close to their shore that could be used as a blockade.

And many other central america countries are deep in bed with China (Costa Rica, Salvador, Honduras, and obviously Nicaragua).
