Most of the people who died building the canal were not Americans. Mostly Jamaicans and other Caribbean types. Maybe 400 Americans died since they were not the ones providing the labor. Corps of Engineers designed the Canal and lock system.
In the 1880s the French began building the Canal and they brought in Frenchmen as well as other Caribbean types. Thanks to Yellow Fever and malaria thousands died. French had to abandon the project. US came in and USACE designed the Canal as it is today with its lock system and Gatun. We reduced deaths of the workers. But we never had thousands of Americans involved in the actual digging.

Cool. Still doesn't diminish the strategic/historical importance of making sure we control it, not China.

What's crazy about this whole thing is the b.s. about costs. It's like 3x cheaper to use the PC vs Suez and Suez has no lock system to maintain and is just a salt water channel between the Med and Red. The Suez is a frick job.

If we need it strategically, we will take it.

Its such a non issue to begin with.

Canal administrator Ricaurte Va´squez told The Associated Press that a Hong Kong consortium won a bid in 1997 that allows Chinese companies to operate in ports at the ends of the canal. But U.S. and Taiwanese companies also operate ports along the canal, which is open to commerce from all countries, Va´squez said. Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino has said market conditions are used to set passage rates and that China was not influencing the country.
The United States is the canal’s biggest user, accounting for about 75% of canal traffic in fiscal year 2024. China comes in second at 21%.

No, he knows what he's doing. Its the people who believe him that are the problem.
There was zero talk about the Panama Canal until Donny decided to pull another "Mexico will build the wall" moment.

And we'll do so. Though we need to be ready for a heavy China response. This is just as important to them as apart of their dominance in the western hem. Possible we'll be at war with them there, and on the MX border. MX/China have partnered up more than Americans have any clue about.

Screwing over US-flagged ships. Playing hardball with the Navy on transit.
Two of the central tenants of the agreement to hand it over was that the US gets a discount and that the USN can use the damned thing when it needs to.
They aren't living up to that, and they are handing over management to a foreign government, whcih they were absolutely not supposed to do.

Thanks
Here is Rubio's testimony on the topic

We love our foreign wars, dont we folks?
The Panama Canal is just a distraction to play the masses

Panama had better open up a history book, look into who built the damn thing and what happened when that country FAFO after the 1st MAGA POTUS occupied the Oval Office.
Noriega wanted to test Reagan's resolve over drug money, now the fool that runs Panama has to deal with a POTUS with zero fricks to give when it comes to the USA's best interest. There's a new sheriff in town, and he's got 4 years with no need to worry about reelection.

Chinese run some ports at the coast. A concern, yes. We also run port facilties on the other side across from them. Chinese are not involved in canal fees for transit or anything else involved with the canal in terms of use.
If we took it, we'd have to charge the same if not higher fees for OUR merchant ships to pay for the maintenance and operation of the canal.
This would be a money grab and you would frick over an ally who is very much open to helping the US on the immigration issue .

I love protecting our nation. Stay up in your protected enclave up in Alaska where you don't have to worry about how fricked the lower 48 gets.
China is bringing this war to us. You can cower all you want up there protected from it all, but defending ourselves is something we will have to do sooner or later. Let's be proactive for once.

Not if we don't take them in. Simple. You "roll over and take it" people are insufferable.

This isnt protecting our nation.
6 months ago you folks wanted all foreign wars ended and troops brought home.
Now youre war mongering with the best of them.

They are fricking us over by letting China control it. They are not a friendly ally. And the immigration issues stips on its own when we say the doors are closed. No one knew about the Darien gap until Biden opened the gates and gave Venezuelans an avenue up here. No that's closing, so they'll close it on their own.
