Oh the plight of the young white male
You have your head in the sand. There is a massive disparity in success rates of young women and men today and it is getting worse.

My granddaughter is part hispanic. I had this conversation with her, shes elite academically.
She would rather rise on her own merit.
I've the same discussion with my kids. I'm Isleno and have told my kids they can claim Hispanic. They are unsure about it so they don't check the box. My point is you use it to beat these DEI asses at their own game.

You should be more respectful of white males.
They are responsible for the civilization that makes you comfortable and prosperous.

There is something else at play.
The other factor I believe is that the friend is from a small Texas town that is probably 95% Hispanic and says she wants to return to the area to practice medicine. There is a dire need for doctors in the area. I bet her interview application had the residency screeners in tears. I still think my daughter gets more interviews if her name is Juanita Martinez.
But my daughter will be fine. She has had rotations at Northwestern and Baylor and will interview with them.

I got mad and cursed DEI but my daughter got mad at me for even suggesting that.
That’s on you, pops.

I’m not a DEI proponent.
Tests are a game.
When I was in med school, my third year started with internal medicine. I was told to read Cecil’s or Harrison, and research my patients with articles from the library. I also referred to Washington Manual. This was the studying I did for the rotation. I did the same for surgery. Read Sabiston, Cope’s Early Diagnosis of the Acute Abdomen.
Took the shelf exam, mini board. Scored above average, but not stellar.
For pediatrics, I carried Harriet Lane in pocket, and someone told me about “pediatrics board review book.” No supplemental reading. Just memorized questions. Score 98%.
I think I learned more on medicine and surgery, but I scored off the charts on pediatrics.
I guess a test is the only direct comparator, and from what I’ve seen at our med school, study sketchie and uworld test banks is the modus operandi of 99% of students.
I rarely have a learner who reads any articles from journals. Some will read a book, but most rely on test bank recall.
I guess memorizing test questions is a skill. It requires knowledge, but not philosophy.
In general, medical school is not the intellectual citadel that I thought it once was due to “teach to the test, study for the test” paradigm.
All that said, picking people only for diversity is the same as not picking them because of diversity.

Interesting, because I’m observing the exact opposite in the HS Junior and Seniors around here. There does seem to be a difference between the older Gen Z’s and the younger ones.

Of course. They are using it to forcefully control what "that's just the way it is" is to an entire generation.

quote:Perhaps, but the residency app is more about why you believe the program is a good fit for you, and how you're a good fit for it. For your daughter, the first part will be especially important in her interviews.
I bet her interview application had the residency screeners in tears.

DEI groups make it real easy to spot the true racists
It's easy because of weak local and state Republicans everywhere.
When young people see something that is normalized in virtually every institution of meaningful size then they grow to believe that it is like that for good reason. If it were flatly rejected in close to half the institutions then they would be more likely to question it.
Every time a Republican caters to DEI board or committee appointment they are helping destroy America.
Every time a Republican caters to a black caucus legislator demanding to know why an institution isn't more diverse, they are further normalizing the rot.
This all starts at the state and local levels. Write your state legislators and let them know to stand up against DEI and to anyone that even shows an interest in hiring or making policy based on race.
