This is how it must be done. No citizen should ever have to pay a higher utility rate because a company needs utilities.

quote:

President Trump announced early Wednesday that large data centers will be required to produce their own electricity and share any surplus with the communities around them in the form of a “dividend.”

If companies want to make their Data Centers popular, pay the community, and/or individuals within the community, a “dividend.” I have watched the process closely, and Data Centers that were highly unpopular in a certain area, have become extremely popular when a financial deal is struck. MAKE DEALS, and get them built!!! GREAT FOR THE U.S.A. President DJT

Dividend must be paid to the user of the affected utility!!

Umm ever hear of supply and demand?

Higher demand of a constant supply equals higher prices. Why should electricity work differently? Higher prices mean more supply will follow to meet demand then prices come down.

Is there a number for the corporate buildings in many cities have their own power and not use a power company? I know it is done.

I have a friend that is the safety lead at a big data center project. He works for a large national commercial construction company.

They're getting paid big bucks and these data center folks aren't worried about budgets. They're throwing money around like it's peanuts. The construction company guys ride around the site inencled air conditioned off road brand new side by sides and eat paid fir catered lunches everyday from the best restaurants in the city.

They can definitely pay for their own power.

Here’s the problem this causes though. Whatever type of power they build increases demand for the components needed. Which increases prices and lengthens supply horizons. Perfect example is gas turbines. 5 years right now to wait for a new one. You know who else needs turbines? Utilities and power developers.

The higher prices and longer wait times are going to find their way into the rate base. So yeah the data centers are bringing their own power gen, but it’s still going to increase rates for regular utility customers anyway.

Dividend could offset that but I doubt it’ll be the norm. Not trying to rain on the parade, this is my industry and the jury is still very much out on the ‘bring your own power’ downstream impacts.

Why can't that supply be created by the people that need that demand?

I don't have a problem with multi-trillion dollar companies having to provide their own power in order to keep prices lower for citizens.

This idea from conservatives that corporations are equal to, and often times treated as superior to, people needs to end. This is where being principled starts to cause problems and common sense should take over.

It's just like giving freedom to socialists and communists who want to take away your freedom. It sounds great on paper, but the real world application is much less appealing.

It's crazy how many Data Center projects there are throughout the US. My son has been traveling all over the West for the past couple of years drilling geothermal wells for companies to use the heat/ steam from underground for power plants. A lot of the wells are for new or planned Data Center projects, and a lot are in the middle of nowhere, like outside small towns in Northern Nevada.

Sure they can pay for their own power, and provide food and side by sides.
But always remember, there ain't no such thing as a free lunch.
Something or somebody ultimately has to pay the bill. Users of the data centers will pay, that means everyone even if you never touch a computer or cellphone, everyone is in this chain.

Good for him.

It'll be hilarious watching MSDNC become big fans of data centers.

It shouldn't. At the same time, if a data center is opened in Podunk, USA (which is where they tend to be built), and the local bureaucrats don't fully understand the resource impact, the area residents living situations are screwed.

At least that is the threat.

Even if it is vastly overstated, the threat of that possibility is extremely bad PR for Data Centers. In a hope to slow US progress, and have a shot at catching up, China uses its propaganda tentacles within CCP-loyal MSM factions to spread that concern and broadcast the supposed DC Water&Utilities&Pollution&Noise&JobLoss threat to Americans. America's mindless dolts lap it up like pigs in slop, and scream to shutdown all the evil DCs.

From a Nat'l Security standpoint, ceding AI to China would be exceedingly stupid. So the alternative is to allay kindled fears with interjection of Big Government requirements that "Data Centers to Generate Their Own Power and Provide ‘Dividend’ to Communities" which America's mindless dolts find as a soothing fix.

Elon says they will all be in space eventually. No need for water and unlimited sun.

Without data centers zero chance America can remain a world leader. Military, medical, business all advancing at a pace never seen..all data driven. Half our economy is now propped up by data.

All this hoopla over data centers and I doubt most people have any idea what is in their power bill.

In NYC you pay more for the power because they insist on "clean" power from canada, the company that has flooded 100s of thousands of pristine forest to provide it.

In addition there are environmental surcharges, taxes upon taxes. They charge a tax on con edison light poles and then tax you on that tax. Rggi which is a ridiculous ripoff selling and buying carbon credits. Money to give low earners power relief.

Your power bill should probably be half what it is in NYC, and its like that for many states. I see the gov in VA just reinstated Rggi there.

But its easier to blame data centers.

You are wasting your breath man. If a company needs additional power that harms consumers in any way, that company can build its own energy producing facility. Everyone knows the only thing these data centers even asked for was "we just need to make sure we have power". I say, "then develop your own or pay up front for the power company to build it for you. Not one nickel of it should be subsidized by consumers!!

Would you build a house out in the country with your very own water well if no public water service is near or would you sue to have the public water service supply created for you at the expense of the existing consumers?
