Would be just about the only way something like this could happen unintentionally. But still, the odds of hitting a support dead on while under a mechanical failure of the ships systems is astronomical.

In all seriousness, this is sad, and crazy.

With the amount of cargo volume we have in somewhat urban areas, it's crazy this is a rare event. Shows you how well these things are actually run at a street level.

Local radio just quoted jurisdictional police chief as saying there were ‘no indications of terrorist activity’.

OK, but that’s pretty quick and, still, zero detail.

I will still need convincing…

Could they not drop anchor?

Get assistance from a tug?

I would imagine that there was chaos of the fire on board was raging (engine room?), but it boggles my mind that someone on that ship’s bridge didn’t think about the anchor.

There is an angle of it showing the ship lost power and regained it too late. He tried to reverse it and steer but physics was running the show

There are a few insurance companies who may be filing bankruptcy over this incident.

Biden administration better hope to God (or maybe whatever demonic deity they worship), that DEI was not involved in this incident in anyway.

That diversity bullshite is all fun and games until bridges start collapsing and major disasters start occurring.

It’s not like the anchor will stop that thing quickly.

It’s usually a shared risk for SSLs for these types of incidents.

Multiple carriers will pay into one massive policy to cover vessel collisions for all of them.

I would imagine that an anchor (and chain) would have affected their trajectory, regardless of the physics at play prior to dropping the anchor.

Rewatching the video you can see the ship turn directly towards the pillar

From another angle you can see that he lost the stern and it sent the bow in for a direct hit

695 is the newer, more "outside" loop/bypass for traffic on Interstate 95. To take 895 you have to get well into the city.

And, yes, this will be a ground transportation nightmare.

Ok I’m retired and I’ve been living on my sailboat here in Puerto Rico for a year, I also have my 25 ton captain license.

I can’t tell much from the video but for it to hit a pylon dead center, it takes luck.

Remember these massive ships take a mile to start a turn so it’s not like at the last minute the pilot turned the wheel to hit it!
The way the bridge collapse is not a surprise. It’s a metal bridge, old and need or repair. Each part of the bridge is part of the whole structural integrity, so if you hit it just right it can cause a domino effect.

But it does seem a bit suspicious, as a captain I would be blowing the horn like crazy as soon as I realize I’ve lost control of the ship and I have a massive bridge coming towards me!!

Surely that figure can't be right.
