Did it have to?

If you reduce the speed, then the impact should be lessened.

It's literally a scene from final destination irl. Being in a car on a collapsing bridge over water is about as scary of a scenario one could imagine.

Almost as scary as waking up and finding yourself in Baltimore

How do you plow directly into the support structure at 7 knots? Like it was aiming for it.

Something doesn't seem right here.

Right, and everyone around here was so for the infrastructure bill that passed.

You lose power twice as you approach.

Where was the pilot boat and tugs. There’s no way that big of a vessel goes through that sensitive of an area unaided.

With the amount of cargo volume we have in somewhat urban areas, it's crazy this is a rare event. Shows you how well these things are actually run at a street level.

You have enough mass traveling at fast enough speed, you can take down a bridge. Looks like the power was going out on this container ship and it was probably way off the channel as well

11.5 million vehicles use the bridge every day

Surely that figure can't be right.

That’s probably annually

The math becomes pretty clear it’s not daily when you start to think of 500k vehicles per hour at a steady 24 hour flow

Should not occur, but if the power goes out on the ship and given the currents it can. You have a huge hunk of floating metal traveling at about 8 knots with no ability to steer.

Same thing happened in New Orleans back in 1995 or 96 when a big freighter lost power at Algiers point and the pilot had to figure out a way to slam the boat into the wharf and took out a large section of the Riverwalk.

It lost power underway. You can't do anything except try to restore power. The timing was as bad as possible.

I think its fairly common for container ships to be single engine. If that thing shuts down, it's a process to get it started again. Not to mention it shut down for a reason and likely isn't going to restart.

More likely with the ship blipping they lost the power plant which means no steering.

You’d be very surprised. He may have had a channel pilot on board, but tugs aren’t guiding every ship in and out of port. Much less going down river.

I don’t think you realize just how much these cargo ships weigh.
