Bill Gates Foundation backed company released thousands of mosquitoes in Florida & Texas

But when the internet caught wind that Bill Gates may have been behind the project, posts circulated on social media that questioned the real motivation behind the project.

You cant just assume that bill gates gmo malaria preventing mosquitos released in florida and texas caused the first cases of malaria in florida and texas in 20 years.

if that's true, how is it not illegal to do such a thing? you might as well dump some modified pesticides into people's backyards without their approval while you're at it...florida residents should sue them

I watched a documentary a while back about how CRISPR works and how its being used in genetic engineering. CRISPR is segments of bacteria DNA that have encoding on being able to protect DNA changes from viruses. The CRISPR protien re-edits the virus sequence back or just takes it out. Since this discovery, genetic engineering has exploded. LINK
Scientists discovered they can use what's called a "gene drive". This encodes the CRISPR DNA segments into mosquito DNA to force a trait of sterility to new spawn. If the recessive trait for sterility is bread out, these organisms have the CHISPR protein to edit the recessive gene back in. Eventually new generations are all sterile males.
This falls under "just because you can, doesn't mean you should". Even in this documentary the scientist working on these mentions there can be an ecological impact but seemed to downplay it. Forcing the extinction of a species rather abruptly is going to impact ecosystems one way or another.

Nature finds a way.
I can see these causing mosquitos to evolve and reproduce asexually or become hermaphroditic meaning man will have to create a new organism. They reproduce at a prolific rate giving nature more generations to adjust and adapt. Playing this game only makes a stronger and harder to remove pest.
