The EPA approved this a few years ago as it was presented as a solution to mosquito overpopulation using (if I remember correctly) the genetic modification to implement sterilization.
No parallels to any other Gates-backed projects though, right?

That is the only thing to watch for. A lack of drivers in the most bleeding edge/newest laptop hardware (wifi, bluetooth, fingerprint readers). Some of those operating system links should have a supported devices page. Dell and Lenovo have official linux laptops. You can also check out r/linuxhardware.
