Shot my personal best deer at about the same distance with a .270, didn't find a drop of blood and lost hope trying to trail him 'properly' since we didn't find a drop. After eating dinner we came back and my buddy convinced me to just start tromping around with a flashlight, got lucky and found him about 75 yds away, the only blood being at his final stop, and with what ended up being a good shot, maybe a couple inches back.

Obviously luck was involved, and maybe it'll disturb the woods, but no way I'll ever quit looking for one again until I've given at least that second effort that panned out that time

I didn’t want this to turn into a pissing match but I guess I’ll break out the old faithful line that I can assure you is true....I’ve let bigger deer walk then you’ve killed I bet, including a179” mississippi buck. With that said y’all are right I choked, rushed the shot not expecting him to cross that lane when he did, cross hairs were dead nutts on him but I know I jerked the trigger instead of just squeezing and taking my time. I know better I choked,

I only went 40 yds in bc I knew I’d come back to look in the daylight with some trained dogs and I know the least amount of scent I put in there the better for them dogs. We’re avoit to look now, it’s been 22 hours or so and I know I didn’t bump him. So hopefully he’s not far, but my gut says from what I saw was I just choked and gave him a hair cut. We about to see.

You did right on giving the deer time. If you think a deer is gut shot give him plenty of time to die before you chase him all night and run out of blood.

No, you can’t assure me of that.

Congrats. That’s a nice deer.

It’s not. You posted on a public forum about rushing a shot and missing a deer from 65 yards. I told you to go spend some time at the range. End of story.

No amount of range time can prepare you for the rush of adrenaline that occurs when that big buck steps out when you least expect it.

Congrats on going back and finding him.
Ton of take aways from this post.
No blood or sign of hit = dead deer
Dogs don’t always track a dead deer
7mm mag at 60 yards does not equal Thor’s hammer
Pile of white hair does not equate to a miss.
Glad you found him let’s see the pics they not loading

How do I post a pic from my phone? What app do I have to download? Haven’t scored him, but he’s not the stud 10 I thought and won’t make 140”. He’s 16.25” wide bladed G2 on one side hince the name “blade” kicker off opposite g2. His G2s are about 10” long.

I can email pics of him also if one of y’all can post him, not the best service where I’m at.

Also I’m glad it’s this one because he was a daily visitor on my protein feeder this year. This was the first year I’ve fed protein as an experiment mostly since I’m only on 60 acres. This buck has been gone since the middle of October, so I figured he was dead. I’m glad it wasn’t a waste of all that money feeding protein. This was the 2nd year of having pics of this buck also so a little history with him. I’m glad I didn’t look more then the 40 yds last night and backed out and came back today.

OP glad you found it.

Truth.

A good dog will. OP doesn't have a good dog. Probably a good pet but it sucks at being a dog if it couldn't find a deer that only ran 45-80 yds. There is no excuse in the world for that. If anyone says it needs training they are FOS. A dog doesn't need training to use its nose.

I can show you a dog that's never been trained and will track wounded deer through a swamp. A dog that averages 30 deer a year and has never been on anything other than real deer. No mock blood trails or hide/hooves. A dog either has it or it dont.

I’m in the same boat this morning. Had to pull off a very awkward shot at 40yds. No signs of a hit at all. No blood or hair. My crosshairs were clean on his shoulder when I pulled though

A shoulder shot usually drops them but since you said it was an awkward shot I'm assuming quartered. I've killed quite a few with absolutely no sign of being hit. No blood or hair to be found. Some weren't recovered until the next day and one was recovered 2 weeks later. 5 of us looked for it and didn't find it. Buzzards did. Now I have a German Shepherd that I know will find them.

I can throw a rock in the thickest cutover and the dude will come back with it. Might take him 15 minutes but he will find it.

Get a dog on it.
