Congrats man!!! I’m just glad you found it.
And for the debate...there is some in the blood trailing world that believe a wounded deer releases scent from glands in their hooves in addition to the blood. As I’ve trained my dog I’ve tried to incorporate all of those into the training. Blood, no blood with hooves, watered down blood, different angles and loops to mimic what a deer might do, up wind, down wind, distractions like other animals etc. I’ve seen some dogs make some amazing finds with little or even no blood and it makes you wonder if its just luck or there is something to this. My dog is only 2 and he’s found a lot of deer that were difficult finds but not incredible. Then one night he tracked a gut shot deer starting with a few specks of blood and then nothing. It took us an hour to just find the first speck of blood. Each speck was probably 30-40 yard apart and then it ended. He wanted to keep going so we just kept following him. 400 yards later he found the deer. It blew my mind. Maybe there was more blood, maybe not. Those types of things we will never fully understand but if do believe its more than just putting a random dog on a trial. I also believe that once they figure it out they can learn it better and better. Its a natural thing for them to do.

No, I do. It’s one of them fancy One Eyed Beagles. He has never failed on leading me straight to where the deer is.

That makes no sense to me.
It wont because you are stubborn or ignorant. If you shoot a deer and there is no blood or hair on the ground, what is the dog following? Invisible blood?

Why didn’t you gut it after finding it?

They absolutely do. How else does a dog find a deer with no blood on the ground? The dog isnt smelling or looking for blood. He is following the scent of the only deer in the woods that was hit. I dont know how people cant understand that.

Lol I never claimed I have a pro blood dog. I have a bad arse HRCH young duck dog that’s found 3 deer in the past 2 weeks so Is just realizing what a deer is.
Congtats on the deer. Thats it. He is a duck dog trained for ducks. From what Ive heard its hard to get a dog to do both. But I believe you are right and that you did set him up to fail.

Nice deer! Glad you found it.
This thread was a sad read, by the way. I shouldn’t be, but I am amazed by the arrogance that some of the people in this thread have shown.

I don’t know this baw, but we take ours back to camp and gut them there, as do many other places I’ve hunted. Also lots of people who skin/quarter without ever touching the guts.
Edit: nice deer, OP!

I just figured getting the guts out quick would be a priority for one left out a long time, unless the camp is right there.

Good job on the deer that’s a nice one. Not so good of a job on the face blurring work.

Awesome deer. I have a lab mutt that has found a ton of deer. Some of them easy but some we would have lost without her. I’ve never had to use a lead and learned a long time ago to stand back and let her do her thing. Most of the times I tried to force her to go a certain direction we ended up where she wanted to go to start with. Everybody that has hunted much has a story of the deer that dropped the opposite direction of where it should have. If she doesn’t find it, it didn’t die. I have a catahoula puppy I’m hoping she can pass the torch to. They have way different personalities but are very obedient and aren’t prone to running off. A good dog is a greet tool. Not recovering a deer is a horrible feeling. Having a dog find one is an awesome feeling.

Ever consider the fact that dogs nose is picking up blood/guts even when you think there is none on the ground? Deer don’t run on white sheets

Naw baw. I shot a doe tonight, and I went and got my girlfriend’s chihuahua and he trailed his arse down. Millions of years back there was a wolf in his family tree and it came out when he smelled the pheromones.
Should have seen it. That was the first time he had ever been in the woods too. I pulled him out of my pocket and said “get him baw”! Took me right to her.
* I can believe that there are some pheromones that the dogs smell, but they mainly trail on blood. Like tenfoe said there are just specks of blood the human overlooks/cant see
