PSA- Be Careful Cleaning Your Guns
Posted on 3/10/21 at 4:14 pm

I consumed a handful of whiskeys last night and thought I would oil up some of my shotguns. Typically I keep the chamber open to make sure there isn’t a shell in the gun. Long story short, chamber wasn’t open, which should have been an indicator. The gun went off in my kitchen and blew out a window. Could have been a lot worse. Make sure your guns are cleared when you clean them.

Or just don’t get drunk and mess with guns.

Well that was really fricking stupid, I mean really frickING stupid. It’s people like you that give gun owners a bad name

Congrats on being man enough to admit you made a mistake that only cost you a window.
And congrats on being a dumbass for drinking and cleaning your gun that was as loaded as you probably were.

Dude, unload the fricking gun before bringing it home!

I consumed quite a few last night too but I didn't shoot out my window. I went to bed like a normal drunkard.

I didn’t come here seeking approval. I came here to remind everyone to be careful.

The gun is always loaded. Never point the barrel in the direction of anything you aren't willing to destroy.

Also, maybe don't pull the trigger when cleaning your guns.

There are LOTS of people here who leave their guns loaded all hunting season if not all year. It is an incredibly stupid thing to do. All risk and no reward.
If you aren't using it, unload it.
The old man drilled into our heads that the first thing you do any time you touch any gun is make sure its unloaded and then double or triple check that it is, and periodically check that it still is. shite happens easily enough on its own, dont help it.

No. Guns do not "go off". You were a careless dumb shite handling firearms while drunk and shot your window.

More like at least be sober.

Always Verify it's unloaded. Not to be critical but.... IDIOT.

I guarantee you there's a whole bunch of people reading this who have handled loaded guns drunk. They won't be the ones posting here admitting to doing it but it happens. Glad OP is spreading the word

I've had 2 friends lose their sons due to hunting accidents by being accidentally shot. One was heading out the woods with a friend right behind him, he crossed a fence and for some reason his friends gun fired and struck the kid in the chest killing him instantly. He was only 18 at the time and a senior in high school.
Another friends son was hunting alone and in a tree stand. From what they can gather, he was leaving the stand and for some unknown reason his gun fired and killed him. He was found at the base of the tree and the bullet retrieved from his body was one from his gun.
Bottom line is if you're done hunting, unload the damn gun. Both these young men would not have died in that manner if just following that advise.

Pics of the window or it didn’t happen

Step #1, no exceptions, check to ensure gun is not loaded as soon as you touch it...
Even if you are nearly 100% sure it's unloaded.
Even if the guy before you checked it and handed it to you.
Even if you never keep it loaded, for some reason.
The habit to establish is to always do this first.
