I’m old school charcoal pit guy. I grill steaks, chicken, pork chops, burgers, smoke briskets etc. Is there anything I can’t do on a pellet that I currently do on coal? Also cleaning a pellet, is it pretty easy? Getting tired of the mess with coal

Depending on the grill, it might be tough to get a good sear with the pellet grill.

I vacuum the ash out every couple of weeks, takes a couple of minutes to do.

I like my stick burner/charcoal smoker but it's nice to be able to set and not worry about the temp while I'm out and about

The pitboss grills have a deal you can slide over and allow the flames to come up. That's one thing I like over the traegers.

I still have trouble with the one I have at the camp. I have a rec teq at the house and it works a lot better for searing. Both of them work really well.

Another option might be a master built gravity smoker. Its like a pellet grill that uses charcoal. Can be set from 150-700 deg so you can cold(ish) smoke up to a hard seer.

Pellet is a good choice if you don't want to mess with coal. I have a camp chef but have only used it a few times. It doesn't give the same smoke or flavor as my ceramic, but pressing a button to start it is easy.

Clean up is very easy.

I will still use my ceramic for long cooks on the weekend, but the pellet is great for quick meals during the week.

I had doubts so I looked up its specs.

749° is pretty damn good.

Eta....I own a traeger. I wouldn't dare use it for steaks. I only use it as a smoker.

love my traeger. easy to clean. I use a small dry vac when it needs it. I still use a charcaol pit but man, the traeger lets me just sit it and forget it.

Shoulda got the 1080 then I haven't touched my Primos in a year since getting it. Not that it cooks better...its just so easy and the extra space.

I wasn't a pellet fan until I got one 1/2 price at BBQ guys. I have a smoker, but you can turn that thing to any temp and it will keep it for 12-18 hours without touching it. Feels like cheating smoking.

If I want the best sear I use cast iron, if I just need a good one station sear I crank up the sear station on my weber. NOTHING is going to beat hot cast iron for a sear regardless of the heat source.

Another vote for pit boss. It will do it all.

And customer service is great. I bought mine used and when I had trouble with the igniter I called the service department. When I gave them the serial number she knew it was under warranty. No questions at all, just found out what I needed and sent the parts to fix it. The control board was bad and sent it to me at my address. Don’t know if the original owner registered it or not but she mailed it to me free of charge no questions asked. I appreciated that.

She wanted to send me an igniter. I told her I had checked the resistance with my fluke and what it was and didn’t think the igniter was the problem. She said ok. Get out your multimeter and together we will figure out what is bad. We worked through each component until we determined it was the control board. Then she dropped one in the mail. I’ll buy another Pit Boss when the time comes.

I really need someone to talk me out of this. The combo is appealing to me because I grilled everyday when the power was out after Ida.

I bought a Traeger 650. I’m not a serious grillmeister. The Traeger has served me well. The ease of use has allowed me to branch out and experiment in ways I never did with the green egg or a gas grill. The temperature consistency makes for no worry cooking. Cleaning the Traeger is a snap.

For me, the answer is yes. A Traeger can't recover heat fast enough for where I live (north of DS) in cold weather when I have to open lid to flip & sear red meat on both sides during the winter.

I'll admit I'm a Weber honk ( 1 kettle/2 gas) and I still use the charcoal 4 out of 5 times. The kettle has a SNS insert. I've been using a Weber kettle for 40 years.

I think most people will tell you that pellet grills aren't something you'll get real comfortable with if you have to leave the house for a few hours for long cooks.

No grill is perfect until you put in the time to learn to what to expect from it. My $0.002
