Once again.. Check, check and recheck for a round in the chamber!

Another tragedy that could have been easily avoided!
#1 Rule when handling firearms: ALWAYS TREAT IT AS IF IT WAS LOADED!
Man on video call showing how to clean gun accidentally shoots, kills himself
Could you imagine being the poor family member that had to witness that via video call?
Sad.

My dad was almost shot in the head about a year ago. He was out by the pond with my step mother and they were shooting at something in the pond, legally cant say what it was but it was for dinner . She was mad that she was missing and went inside with her .270. Dad hit "whatever it was" with his pistol....fast forward 6months later and he was putting something in his safe and the strap for the .270 was caught around the door when he went to shut it. He opened the door and flipped the strap in and when he pulled the strap, it pressed against the trigger and blew a hole thru the safe about 6-8" from his head. He couldnt hear anything for a couple days. Needless to say he was home alone for a week and it could have ended much more badly.
ALWAYS double and triple check to make sure you guns are unloaded...
ETA: she was the one that put the rifle in the safe FWIW.... or never trust a woman with a gun....period

Kind of disappointed there was no video.

And Rule #2 -- Never point a gun at anything you're not willing to destroy.
And Rule #3 -- Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target and you have decided to shoot.
The poor guy had to simultaneously violate three of the Four Universal Safety rules. Too bad he was never taught proper gun safety. Fortunately he didn't shoot an innocent family member.

Who points a gun at their own chest anyway?

muzzle control
Around senior year of high school, I resorted to telling people that if they did it after I mentioned it, I would point mine at them. Works 95% of the time
If you know where your gun is pointing and keep your finger off of the trigger, people won't accidentally get shot

I won't even let my kids point a toy gun at people.

I can't walk by the gun counter at Bass Pro for this reason. All these idiots looking at guns, aiming them back across the store as they see if they like the feel of it. I've slapped several gun barrels from near my head from these idiots. It's better to just stay away.

Tons of people every year shot with unloaded guns. Can't fix stupidity.
I will say that accidental firearm deaths were at a historic low a few years ago. Doubt it's increased since then.

I hate this shite so much. Is it too fricking hard to shoulder a gun towards a ceiling.

Exactly. I used to run into issues, because when I was looking at different handgun models, I used to ask people at get togethers and stuff if I could see their gun. Well I'd look at it and stuff, but then it would get passed around after I handed it back to the owner. Zero discipline what-so-ever to a gun that could be used for home defense. Insanity.

I wonder how long until AlxTgr is in here spewing nonsense about safeties and blah blah blah.

It's not just Bass Pro - it's just about any gun store, anywhere.
It's especially irritating to me because gun store salesmen have a great opportunity to educate the buyer about a simple, fundamental safety concept. In many (too many) instances this is all the education the buyer will ever receive.
I have mentioned this concept ("Don't Point Guns at People, Irrespective of Whether You Think They are Loaded or Unloaded"), casually, to a couple of retail gun salesmen. Not a one seems to have taken it as a worthwhile suggestion.
I guess the gun store owners don't want to do anything to discourage a sale. I understand the concept of needing to make a profit. But ............

Meh. Rule #1 is always keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction - that way if you mess up every single other thing, everyone goes home alive.
But, this is a good corollary for "Rule #1". More of an "always on" policy, than a sequential rule.
