I see your point, however, if everyone would treat a gun as if it were loaded at all times, then they SHOULD practice proper muzzle discipline at all times also.

But, you and I and the rest of the sensible folks on the OB understand that this isn't a perfect world and there's nothing we can do to account for those who don't care enough to be safe.

It has nothing to do with the OP himself but everything to do with the other thread and the comments that were made to which I was referring. So go eat a dick, dipshit. The point is, loaded or unloaded and safety or no safety it doesn't matter if you ALWAYS follow the rules of gun safety. Even "accidents" that happen can be avoided if the weapon is treated with appropriate respect.

Handguns are the worst. It takes a lot of diligence to be safe with them. I hate gun counters at stores.

The used gun rack at cabelas is the worst. I don't understand why they don't have those guns locked in the rack. I bet 90% of the people who pick a gun up at that thing aren't buying one.

Colonel Jeff Cooper is credited with formulating the Four Rules (now often referred to as the Four Universal Rules) of Gun Safety.

Here are Col. Cooper's original rules with his original commentary on each of them:

RULE 1
ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

The only exception to this occurs when one has a weapon in his hands and he has personally unloaded it for checking. As soon as he puts it down, Rule 1 applies again.

RULE 2
NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY

You may not wish to destroy it, but you must be clear in your mind that you are quite ready to if you let that muzzle cover the target. To allow a firearm to point at another human being is a deadly threat, and should always be treated as such.

RULE 3
KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER TIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

This we call the Golden Rule because its violation is responsible for about 80 percent of the firearms disasters we read about.

RULE 4
BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET

You never shoot at anything until you have positively identified it. You never fire at a shadow, or a sound, or a suspected presence. You shoot only when you know absolutely what you are shooting at and what is beyond it.

I think it's good to have a degree of fear of all guns. Even though I occasionally hunt and range shoot, I still possess a fear of all guns.

That's what I based my 1st post on. Thanks.

That's how we treat each and every gun that comes to the range at Honey Island. Every range officer that works the front desk on their 4 or 5 hour shift will tell you that at least 1 person comes in with a loaded gun and 90% of those always say "I didn't know it was loaded". I've worked the desk my last 2 shifts. On my last shift alone I had 7 guns (5 different people) that either had a round in the chamber or a full mag. I don't know if a gun is loaded. The other shooters don't know either. And based on my experience, 5% of the people who walk up on any given day don't even know their own gun is loaded. It's amazing to me to see the agitation in people when I tell them I need them to point their guns in a certain direction when they get to the desk so I can check/clear them.

Yep.

I was present when a .308 round went right through the ceiling when the rifle's owner began to clean it.

You should have respect for it just like anything else that can kill you. Be safe and smart.

Like someone said earlier, if it isn't pointing at somebody you can do every single other thing wrong and nobody gets hurt.

It doesn't always matter where you're pointing it.

My dad was a cop in the Army and was working armory detail. A 15 year cop came in to return his weapon. My dad told him to clear his weapon. He said "You know it's clear" an pulls the trigger. The shot ricocheted off the floor and went straight into my dad's thigh. This was a cop of 15 years that had to get a weapon out and clear it every day he went on duty. He obviously failed to treat it like it was loaded.

Saw a store worker send a .50 cal slug from a CVA through the wall of the place. Wont say where but its a small sporting goods store in MS. He put it in the bench rest to mount a scope and pulled the trigger. I never went back.

I was at a gun store once and one of the guys behind the counter was showing this girl a glock. When she was done looking at it, she handed it back and he stuck his hand flat out in front of the barrel and dry fired it. Aside from a number of things he did wrong, why the hell would you deliberately stick your hand in front of the barrel???
