I've hunted mainly with a rifle all my life but not much of a bird hunter. Buddy of mine called me up to go dove hunting for opening day and I loved it. So tell me what you dove hunters use. I would like a 12 gauge but one that I could shoot all day and not kick like a mule. And also I'm not paying 1k for the shotgun either. Thanks.

I have Franchi Affinity I bought a few years back that I like. You can get a black synthetic for ~$700.

Benelli montefeltro for $900 is a good all around gun.

A lot of people like the Beretta A300 but I like the inertia action over gas.

870 or mossberg 500. Those two guns have killed untold numbers of tiny, tasy birds.

Beretta A300. Use it for ducks, doves, geese, squirrels and whatever else presents an opportunity. Got it for a steal on a promo code posted here, but it's very reasonably priced always.

What’s your budget then?

And are you wanting a pump or semi-auto?

As to the 870 recommendation, don’t consider a new one. If you can find a used one (made in the 90 and preferably earlier) they’re wonderful.

A new 870 is a complete piece of rusty crap.

I would try to find one of the b’s that fit your price point: benelli, beretta, browning.

Weatherby has a semiauto < $900. I don’t have any experience with them.

Stoegers are a less expensive option but don’t have any experience with them either.

I know it's not a pump or automatic but I have a buddy who swears by one of these for dove hunting

You’re not going to notice the difference in felt recoil between the majority of guns in your budget. You start noticing those differences around $1k, between the berettas, benellis, brownings, Winchesters, etc.
If you want a pump, I’d go with a benelli nova or an 870 pre 2000’s as mentioned by someone above.
If you want a semi-auto, I’d look at the Tristar raptor or viper. I’ve owned a viper 20ga for about 5 or so years now. It mostly stays by the bed but it is my go to rabbit gun. I also let people use it when they want to come hunting but don’t have a gun. My buddy’s stepson shot his first dove with it this morning actually. Anyway, it has never given me a problem and I think it was only like $350. I think the 12ga raptor is about $400 and the viper is around $550

Single shot .410 is where the challenge is. I'm moving to a 22 next season. Reach out and touch 'em.

I have a Winchester SX4 and love it. It’s not as expensive as the 3.5” Italian guns but shoots very well. I bought the max camo 28” for less than 1K.

I had a Beretta A300 and replaced it with the SX4. It is noticeable diff in felt recoil and lighter as well.

Buds online $901

You're in luck. A benelli ultralight 20 ga is way more than that!

Just get a mossberg pump. It'll be cheap and go bang all the time which is all you need.

I just use my grandpa’s old Remington model 11. Made in 1946 and still runs like a champ even though the front bead sight is broken off. Limited out on doves Saturday evening.
