Massachusetts joins the 1000 pound marlin club

There are now seven states that can claim to be portage to a sports fishing vessel that brought in a thousand pound marlin. This week a charter out of Falmouth, MA fished the Atlantis Canyon, about a hundred miles off Cape Cod, and caught a 1260 pound blue marlin.
For the longest time only Louisiana and Hawaii were members of the grander club, but the last 26 years have been good for trophy marlin in America. I have never let a marlin come to gaff, and my largest from the Gulf was estimated to be 650. Anyway, Massachusetts went from a token two month white marlin territory to the talk of billfishing captains around the world. Interesting times.

Not saying you are wrong, but Google AI says there are already 7 states, before the Massachusetts catch, that have had a boat land a 1,000 pounder. Hawaii, Mississippi, Louisiana, Florida, North Carolina, Maryland and Alabama.

I do not believe that Maryland has such a catch. I am aware of Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama (both MS and AL marlin caught in waters closer to Louisiana coast than their respective coasts), Florida, North Carolina, and Massachusetts.

I wasnt trying to "correct you". I was honestly just trying to see which states had broken the 1,000lb mark and Google told me all the states.

Damn they didn’t just join it, 1260 is a monster. I mean that’s 25% bigger than just joining it.
I wonder where that fish was actually caught? These are always goofy because a lot of these boats my dock in 2-4 different states but fish the same grounds.

I have weighed in every single marlin caught in the Blue Marlin Championship since its inception up until last years and this years (health issues)
I have also worked the scales at the Emerald Coast Classic and the Pensacola Ladies invitational...
I am not saying that isnt a grander but in that pic it does not look a grander. It could be the picture.
Those could be some big 450 pound dudes in the pic.

Marlin can be eaten but tastes like crap. Usually it is ground up and made into a patty type deal.
We donate all the kill fish to the Mobile AL homeless shelters. A fish that size can feed a lot of people for awhile.
If I am not fishing the tournament, I am a registered official with the Billfish Association. I am usually monitoring the weighing. My youngest son transports and handles all the fish. He also gets to chop them up and put them in the Homeless transport trailer. Nasty job.

I hope you’re on the mend. I fished the BMGC years ago on the SeaSpray with Capt Bill.
Regarding Marlin, I had a chance to go to Tahiti about a decade ago, stayed at the Hilton on Moorea. They serve fresh fish stew every morning as part of the breakfast buffet. Didn’t realize it was Marlin until one of the workers showed me a picture. Him and his son would go out in a 18-20 foot really old center console and them. Not huge fish, but the hotel would pay him $5-10/lb.

The article says it was more than 11 feet long and "When the boat returned to the docks, a crowd was waiting, and weighing the fish became a brief spectacle." Also, "The fish’s head was on its way to the UMaine lab to determine its age," So I don't think they just eyeballed it and said 1260.
