As outdoorsmen, why do people associate good products with high prices?
Posted by Jack Daniel

Ive been thinking about this. Why have we become a society of outdoorsmen that think because an item is ridiculously prices it must be awesome and the best? I can not understand validating an ice chest that costs $300 or a piece of camo clothes that cost $150.
Old men from back in the day have some slammers mounted on the wall and killed it with a shotgun wearing flannel clothing.

With optics, it's legit.

I don't mind the high priced coolers, they are indestructible.
I hate high priced camo. Wtf?

I am 44, prior to being about 25 I spent every day of my hunting life either cold, wet, or both. Gumball boots with holes in em, cotton gloves and socks soaked from sweat, and walls windproof coveralls that should have led to a lawsuit for false advertising. Reloads with wax in the top so that only every 10th one would misfire, Winchester model 12 full choke that rusted when the humidity got over 10%,
Expensive things like wool socks, polypropylene, goretex, thinsulate, and top notch rain gear made me comfortable.
In the Summer I drank Cokes and Koolaid, lived dehydrated, sunburnt, and wet from sweat with some sort of crotch rot for 4 months a year. Now I have wicking clothing with vents, underwear that keeps my balls so dry you could store gun powder on em, 110 SPF sunblock, and fluid replacement drinks to make me feel almost as good as when I left the dock. I got towels for my head, and coolers for my drinks that actually allow you to carry ice that is NOT frozen in gallon jugs. Life aint bad, I am never going back.

Other than your ice chest idea, you DO generally tend to get what you pay for. Who here hasn't bought something cheap and been totally burned by it? Likewise, how often have any of us here regretted buying something more expensive, provided they could afford it? I'm not saying everything cheap sucks and everything expensive is good.
I'm with you on Yeti stuff, though... but I mean, if that's what someone wants to spend their own cash on, more power to them. I'd personally rather go buy something actually cool with that cash.

Yeah, Goretex and neoprene suck balls. Wear your flannel and your red ball waders, I'll be warm and toasty. You get what you pay for.

Some things, I'm willing to pay top dollar, but some things, I have saved a lot of dollars.
$300 for a small icechest is one of those things I wouldn't spring for. I have paid over $750 for a SSI 300 qt icechest though.
Told the wife that I can used it for a coffin when I die.

Sometimes. There are good quality products that cost more. There are also average products with brand appeal that are a worse value than some lesser priced products.

This has been generally my experience.
Quality products seem to be made better and the warranty is way, way better.
Off topic: how is your raised gardens doing?
