I think the high dollar stuff makes for some great gifts.

I wouldn't buy myself a Yeti, but somebody else did.

To me, gifts are supposed to be something nicer than you'd buy yourself.

I think its more of a challenge to find things, hunting, fishing thats on the cheap, or on sale. I'm not an impulse buyer, I like to shop. Find whatever you want, keep abreast of the going price and just wait, you'll find it cheaper some where. But, I do have some things that at the time were pricey, that I bought and still have it today. Wolverine boots, pd 100 15 years ago and werent the priciest at that time, but are still going strong on its 3rd set of soles. Bought some binocs for 650.00, again 15-20 years ago, and still going strong. Matter of fact some of the accesories for the binocs were dry rotted or had tore. Called the company and they said ship em up here and will fix and clean everything. Month later, got em back with no charge. I guess they had a lifetime warranty. So some things are worth the price, just don't need to keep ice that long.

Yeah, Goretex and neoprene suck balls.

You must not know what you're doing with it, then!
Goretex is the ultimate shite. It drives -all- moisture from inside and pushes it outward. It itself is 100% waterproof.

Many people knock on higher end guns. I not talking H&H or Purdeys, but good quality Berettas, Brownings, or older shotguns. I have some side by side shotguns that are pushing 100 years in age and look great. Why not have some engraving and hand work for a gun that will last multiple generations if not abused...

I am 44, prior to being about 25 I spent every day of my hunting life either cold, wet, or both. Gumball boots with holes in em, cotton gloves and socks soaked from sweat, and walls windproof coveralls that should have led to a lawsuit for false advertising. Reloads with wax in the top so that only every 10th one would misfire, Winchester model 12 full choke that rusted when the humidity got over 10%, Expensive things like wool socks, polypropylene, goretex, thinsulate, and top notch rain gear made me comfortable. In the Summer I drank Cokes and Koolaid, lived dehydrated, sunburnt, and wet from sweat with some sort of crotch rot for 4 months a year. Now I have wicking clothing with vents, underwear that keeps my balls so dry you could store gun powder on em, 110 SPF sunblock, and fluid replacement drinks to make me feel almost as good as when I left the dock. I got towels for my head, and coolers for my drinks that actually allow you to carry ice that is NOT frozen in gallon jugs. Life aint bad, I am never going back.

So, expensive shite is therapy.

the clothes and stuff I hunted in 50 years ago didn't even keep me warm around Christmas in Louisiana, much less on canada hunts at 30-35 degrees below zero. It costs, but some things are worth it. I'm pretty dang tight, but not totally stupid.

that being said, anybody interested in some almost new lacrosse -80 PAC boots?

I am not advocating people living outside of their means, but what is expensive to you isn't expensive to everyone...

I agree but the jist of it from my view is that there are more shoppers/posers than outdoorsmen these days.

I watched two guys at Geohagens in a leaky blow up raft pull redfish after redfish from the bottom of a cut and throw them head first into a five gallon bucket til they had their limit. Every now and then I would hear the buzz of the air pump adding more air as the raft got a little soft.

We all shot the shite (me from my kayak), caught fish, and had a good time. Watched a guy pull a 24 foot Blue Wave up to the dock with nothing to show later that morning.

I just don't think people are really happier spending money and shopping on all this high end stuff.

That's what I'm saying. It's the people that use expensive gear as a status symbol. Outdoorsmen used to not be like that and I don't like it. Buying a 4-wheel drive truck and growing a beard and painting your face then buying a yeti doesn't mean you know shite about hunting.

y'all ain't got too much in your life to be worried about, if this really bothers you? so what? I roughed it in the 50's and 60's, if I or anyone can afford what we WANT/NEED now, why should that bother you?

A lot of truth in this thread

Weekend warriors or "true" outdoorsmen... I ain't mad at em. The products have a place in the market, but high price doesn't always mean higher quality.

I have gear all over the map (pricewise) and am usually happy just getting out there

that whole paragraph you typed was one of the most stupid things I've ever read. the thread had nothing to do with drugstore hunters, nothing. if I'm looking through my trifocals correctly, it looks to be something comparing prices and products.
yeah, I've been around a while, seen lots of stuff, changes, does that bother you too?

My point of the thread is it seems like people assume a product is the best strictly by the price tag. Then I also made a point of saying people use items as a status symbol. Keep up you old frick. Take some more Metamucil

"I don't like it" well, who gives a flyin' phuque what you don't like?
and who said that if you have a 4 wheel dr truck, and own a yeti means that you know a lot? let me help you, NOBODY said that, duhhhh.
I don't think you titty fed enough, you're missing something important..

eta: well if your point was price,,, you failed to mention it.
