crazy how once the real story comes out it changes from barely stepping on the court to this

So let me get this straight, OP’s friends daughter is ‘upset’ because SHE did backflips all the way to half court when she wasn’t supposed to be on the court. She was properly given a tech.

And this is the ref’s fault????

lol, wooooow

Now we know why there’s a ref shortage…

The shortage didn’t have an impact

I was at a jr high game this fall that the crowd and parents of one side were completely off the charts nasty.

I would guess the T was a result of a game time full of bullshite over the top screaming.

There is always more to the story. And the little girl learned a lesson she hopefully remembers. And it was Jr High. My kid played jr high basketball, anyone that gets worked up about it needs a priority check.

These guys are amateur refs and umps and do it for extra money. They aren’t put through training like the nba or nfl.
we have a crew that also refs Sunbelt games. They are damn near perfect at controlling the game and calling it appropriately for Jr High kids. They do it for easy pocket changes

She broke the rules whether she knew it or not. Sucks but it’s a life lesson and not everyone gets a trophy.

Poor girl though. I feel for her but I don’t blame the refs.

and in spite of this story demonstrating that 1) the shortage had no impact. 2) the correct call was made. 3) this was a poor sportsmanship issue that should be punished by parents

The OP will ignore all these things and continue to say things like in his post

there's a shortage because parents complain about dumb shite like this
has very little to do with it. There are just a shite ton more games played at most levels, but not a shite ton more officials. A sad fact of sports is that 80% of refs/umps below the college level are going to be mediocre at best. They don’t make enough money on their side gig to grind over the rule book, unusual situations, and film to be better. Especially since there is virtually no accountability measures in place. As a parent and coach, I’ve just accepted it. The good news is that they will make bad calls both ways. It is much easier to notice the bad calls against your team than the bad calls that benefit it. In a particular game, it isn’t going to always even out, but over time it will for the most part.

To OP, it will be forgotten in a week. Sucks for the girl, but life goes on and maybe she will grow from it.

ETA: Just read that it was back flips across the court. Can’t really blame the ref if that was the case.

The parents are the worst. Some Karen behind us at my 9 yr old son's basketball game the other night was screaming for every stupid violation. "TRAVEL! CARRY!" Of course it only went one way. Finally, the ref came and said something to her at halftime and that really set her off. The first time she screamed after halftime, she got T'd up and our team got free throws. She then sat there and just mumbled the same shite under her breath after that.

But these are 8-10 yr old kids. They're gonna call the obvious stuff like when some kid tries to stop while on a fast break and he takes 3 giant steps because he's going too fast. But they run the clock for the first free throw all the time if they shoot 2 because if they didn't, the games would take 3 hours. And again, these people are spending their time, making peanuts, so your kid can have a constructive activity to participate in outside of school. Cut them some slack or you go put on the stripes. Most of the parents that do all the bitching couldn't even survive a 10U basketball game due to the amount t if running.

my son is a ref for youth football and he's had grown men and women in his face screaming.

parents are insane.

that being said, i've seen way more Ts in basketball the last few years than i ever did growing up.

same kid as above has won 5 in a row and is going to win district barring a disaster.

2 games ago we were up 15 with 2 minutes left. PG is bringing ball up and guy defending him goes through him and knocks him over and PG falls and hits his head. defender takes the ball and scores while both coaches go check on kid. refs stop the game after the score. coach crosses the physical line of where he is allowed to go and is obviously upset at the ref for the no call and then gets T'd. He was upset, but not over the top. the T was for going onto the court while play was still going on.

last night my son got called on a block (legit call) and the ball came down and he tried to handle it but he caused it to bounce off court. T'd up. he definitely touched the ball, but we went and watched hudl and his coach said he obviously was just trying to stop it and not slamming it.

we go and watch plenty of games for other kids that my kids are friends with and i see Ts these days, way more than when i was in school 20 years ago.

Braxtyn and Jaxsin's mom and dad have made things so miserable that I think refs are just ready to give out when they feel disrespected, because they are very often disrespected.

The age where it’s the worst for coaches and officials is right before HS

Yeah because a lot of those kids don't even end up playing HS.

A good bit of those kids been playing travel ball since they were 5-6 years old. That's all they do for 6 or 7 years and by the time it comes to playing HS they are burned out, some whose parents swear is going to be the next big star will end up not even making the team, etc. HS weeds out a lot of the BS,

Having coached and officiated basketball over the years, as well as other sports, I can say two things.

1) youth basketball is the hardest sport to officiate. Every possession, there are fouls and violations. If you call everyone you are blowing your whistle every 5 seconds, so you have to look at advantage / disadvantage. Of course that looks different to everyone.

2) basketball parents are the worst. I do t know if it’s because they are so close to the court, or the pace of the game, or what.

This is most likely inaccurate. There might not have been a sideline warning, there was absolutely a warning of some capacity.

To OP- it was the right call whether she stepped on the court or did backflips to center court. Get over it.

Further, I've coached, refereed, umpired, and served as president of our towns youth sports at different times. It's dipshits like you who do nothing but complain who are responsible for the shortage. Pick up a whistle and start volunteering or go get your officiating patch. Learn the rules or shut-up. I've had to expel grown arse parents for the remainder of the year from gyms and fields. It's ridiculous...
I had all 3 of my kids compete in different sports and never voiced criticism to a coach or referee, even when I wanted to. It's not that hard. It's youth sports!

Youth/High School Sports Official Shortage
Is it a problem where you live?

Official shortage is a problem all over the US. Do you know why?

quote:

Referee assesses a technical foul on shooting team's cheerleaders. In celebrating what is pretty much a championship win, they stepped on the court. This is between free throws, not while action is going on.

Correct call. What is your issue with this?

quote:

There was no earlier warning,

Yes there was. It is called the "rule book". If you want to pass on the blame, pass it on to the coach who failed to instruct the "cheer instructor" on the rules.

I do coach and obviously deal with idiot parents but that has nothing to do with coaches berating youth referees/officials during a game.

Parents rarely attended sports when I was kid. Sports was for kids, not their parents. It was better then. Now parents think their kid is the next big thing and are a pain in the arse for coaches and officials. They have ruined it.

I am not sure my dad ever saw me play organized baseball and only a few of my basketball games or tennis.

I don’t even root for my own kids when they play sports. Last year I wore the other teams colors to a baseball game just to piss my middle one off. I just tell them to do their best, we practice a lot at home but I never disagree with coaches on technique and stuff. If they don’t play or there’s a bad call, I don’t give a flying frick. Damn sure can’t imagine getting mad at a ref or umpire.
