Been a HS and youth sports official for 16 years. 95% of the idiots yelling during the game have no clue how we are taught and trained to do the job. They wouldn’t last 5 minutes on the field or court if they had to do the job. Perfect example- I have a friend who referees in MLS. I was an AR for him at a youth soccer tournament and the parents were all over him all game long. I’d had enough and turned to a particularly obnoxious parent post game and asked them if they recognized the guy in the middle. Of course not; I then told the parent who he was and the guy looked like he’d seen a ghost.

Are there poorly trained officials? Yes, there are poorly trained officials who want to get better. Are there bad officials who don’t care and do it only for the money? Yep.

That's a shame.

well i feel sorry for you.

My dad and grandpa never missed a single game i ever played in highschool, home or away, basketball and baseball. I will always remember that and be thankful for it. The only games i've ever missed for my two kids are the times when they've played at the same time, and i've never yelled at a ref, nor will i.
and in fact, once i'm done coaching my boys in basketball, i do plan on becoming a youth ref b/c of how ridiculous it is. I have no problem ignoring idiot parents and reminding coaches to chill the frick out, it's a 10 year old catholic league basketball game. Set a good example for your kids or you can get a tech and be told to sit down like a child.
I would like to help make it a rule that if a parent gets unruly we tell the coach to go give them a warning and next time they act out it'll be 2 points deducted from their team. If the coach says they don't know who that is (b/c i'm sure dipshits will try to take advantage of the rule just to deduct points from the other team), then you simply are asked to leave the gym and the game won't continue until you leave.

Not so much burned out but many parents are looking around realizing little Bobby or Jenny isn’t going to be playing much longer and it’s everyone’s fault but theirs.

Now when their kids get cut it’s burnouts fault

We have a severe shortage of youth + HS Lacrosse refs in LA.

You can earn $50-$75+ for youth- HS games, each.

If you or anyone you know is interested = reach out to the Louisiana Lacrosse Officials Assoc. on Facebook for more info.

I’m shocked!

I’m not sure who you target to ref? Old men? Young people are generally terrible.

I have kids that play so I either coach or watch. I’d ref if I didn’t have shite else to do, but I do.

Heck I’d consider it during the week potentially, but I’m also not giving up my Saturday.

So like I said, the issue is who do you target to ref? I really don’t know

ETA; I ref’d soccer in HS. That’s probably who needs targeted. Hell, in college I should have done in honestly would have been a decent gig to earn an extra $400/ month

Umm yeah parents have ruined sports so no sane individual wants to get yelled at for two straight hours for 75$ or get threatened in the parking lot after a football game

It's not just the parents. I know a guy that refereed high school football for years. He said he finally quit because just about every game, he was called a racist for either making or not making calls by one or both of the coaches.

I have often wondered why anyone would want to be a referee.

Wish I could still do it(football-4 yrs) its fun,its good $$$$, but the fans / parents can make it not so fun.
1 st game I ever worked was south lafourche, worked the clock, they hated the calls on the field (big shock),prolly 5 people threatened to kill us on the way down from the box after the game. We met the others at the bottom by the Deputies and told them that and their response was " what ya want me to do? get y'all arse outta here before dey catch ya"

Actually it was not. We did not play for our parents. We played for ourselves. We did not need the constant reaffirmation kids need today from parents. We receive that from our coaches and teammates.

From are parents we receive support to go out on our own. They taught how to be respectful and responsible and pay attention when they were not around.

hS fb in La you are “escorted” nowadays in all my time only by two people after a game “got my radar lit up” 1 was stopped by Leo’s the other was all mouth and when he recognized me had a big aw shite look and skulked away.

After a phone call the next morning he was banned from home games for that school. Most HS admins are taking official security very seriously now.

Now the moron that came after me after a 12 year old game in no in 98

Well he won the FAFO lottery, poor had no clue he really picked the wrong guy??

So wait you're saying because the official didn't use preventative officiating in the championship game he was on a power trip?

Dude...after 15 years of officiating AHSAA and LHSAA football, let me educate you. No official is going to give warnings when you are that deep in a season. First few weeks, sure. Championship game, even at a middle school game, no way. Technical administered correctly.
