This is precisely the reason I have always lobbied against legalized gambling. It destroys individuals. It destroys families. It destroys communities. It destroys society as a whole.

Come on dude... a little melodramatic don’t you think?

He really thought the casino would give him back some of the losses?

I know it doesn’t help but I know how he feels. My wife hit $160 on a slot machine and played it all the way back down to zero. You get over it but it takes some time.

How does one end up marrying a chick that knows how to gamble?

Has to be no less than a 220 pound smoker, right?

I’m pretty sure if you rolled up on your wife having blown 30k at the tables you would probably ask even though you know the answer

So, my brother lives in Houston and is married to a gambling addict. It’s never been a big deal as they’ve only made a handful of trips to Lake Charles ever. Each time tho he’ll wake up in the middle of the night and she won’t be there.

Your brother is an idiot and is as much to blame as her IMO. Like taking an alcoholic to bar and thinking you can control their drinking.

If they both don't get help it will never get better and he is out $30K and there is not a damn thing he can do about it. If she doesn't get help on her own, cut his losses.

If so, it becomes illegal for her to win or lose at a casino.

She could still play blackjack and hope for a push every hand

My grandfather was a gambler and an alcoholic. He alienated everyone close to him in the last few years of his life.
I hope your SIL gets the help she needs before it’s to late and she does something that can’t be undone. My grandfather refused anything. His gambling was so bad that he actually forged my grandmothers signature on power of attorney documents to mortgage their house. It had been clear for 20 years . You guessed it. He lost it at almost 70 years old. That was a rough time for our family. He is the reason I don’t gamble or drink.

I would completely cut off every access she has to money and demand she seek help. If that doesn't work or if she doesn't like it...I would divorce her.

This is the only answer.

This is what I think your brother should do:

Divorce her.

I’m sorry... but I’ve seen this play out before. The problem with gambling addiction is that it not only does the emotional damage of other addictions, but also has a real, financial element that drags down other people. In this case, your brother.

If he doesn’t divorce her now, he will only owe more in the future. It’s not going to get better. Dump her. Start over.

If she has a better than 30k life insurance policy, I’m just floating this out there, it could be addition by subtraction

But for real, time for a divorce now

gambling addiction is hands down the worst

other than extreme outliers, drug addiction takes decades to kill you. even the bad shite like heroin and especially meth

gambling can ruin your life in a weekend. that's why i said $30k is nothing. i've seen countless 6-figure debts over a single trip

Have his wife sign documents to be put on a self exclusion list.

In some states you can do one document that excludes you from all casinos in that state. If that is not available you can do it with each casino individually.

If you are found on casino grounds....you can be arrested for trespassing.

Careful though.....this means she can never be on casino property....not just the actual gaming areas.

She also needs to go to GA (Gamblers Anonymous) meetings asap.

As for family....do NOT loan them money. It’s their debt....let them figure it out. Unless their kids are literally gonna be homeless....do not give them money.
