From the Morning Advocate a few days ago:

quote:

The New Orleans City Council on Thursday approved new rules for businesses seeking local property tax breaks through a controversial state program, becoming the latest local government in Louisiana to create rules for the subsidies.

Under the rules passed unanimously by the council, for city businesses to receive a tax break under the state's Industrial Tax Exemption Program, they must pay their employees at least $18 an hour.

They also must be located in neighborhoods that are struggling economically, and they must not have begun construction on their buildings before requesting the tax break.

That’ll attract business.

So you have to pay barely literate unskilled workers more than double minimum wage, and open up in the worst areas.

No issues with this.

Democrats see businesses as a city funding opportunity. Nothing more.

In actuality, business create jobs, are the life-blood of an economy, and pass on tax-hikes (and lack of tax-breaks) to their customers.

Businesses don't pay taxes, either their customers do, or the taxes strangle them into oblivion.

New Orleans baws need to stir up some shite with this.

One of the worst ideas I've ever heard.

It's like the city government just acts on feel good emotion and doesn't think through the consequences of their actions.

Can someone play devil's advocate and explain any positives of this decision?

Seems beyond dumb

Why do you people still get rustled over the constant pathetic ongoings in NO?

That city is done. It's gone. Get over it.

Focus your time on something worthwhile other than pointing out the hotspots in a dumpster fire.

Two businesses will be opened, each in a different neighborhood.

The first one will spend nearly as much in paint to cover-up the gang-tags spray-painted on their store front, as they received in tax-breaks.

Other one will have three employees robbed, one stabbed.

Not a terrible idea to ask for higher wages since the state and local governments essentially pull their pants down to bare their cheeks in the form of corporate tax exemptions. This would at least make sure the community being pillaged gets a workable wage.

Honestly, this is one of the smartest takes I've ever read here

Businesses just transfer the tax onto their consumers... Dems don't understand basic business economics, and are willing to tax their cash cows into oblivion based on their own ignorance

Yet, they've managed to sucker an uninformed populous into agreeing with their cannibalistic tactics for generations after generations, all the while, the suckers remain suckers... the poor remain poor... and the votes keep on coming

Pathetic.

Why Louisiana Stays Poor

If you live in LA, it's a must-watch. NOLA city council must be experimenting with requirements for the tax exemption. Will be interesting to watch unfold.
