If it isn’t 100% of them then there must be some I’m unaware of.

Everyone wants to be the HNIC and either line their own pockets or play Godfather through granting favors that will pay off for them.

I wonder if any of you people have a thought process. Do you realize that this would actually attract businesses with jobs that already pay $ 18.00 an hour and above ? Do you not also realize that you may have a business in a “disadvantaged” neighborhood and have a perfectly safe work site and a 10 minute drive to a very affluent homestead? And for the yahoos, New Orleans is more vibrant and alive than ever with multiple high end living construction as we speak. You people need to leave the sticks, bayous, and HOAs more often.

Okay, so they won’t locate to those areas and they don’t get the tax break. Why is everyone up in arms over this?
Because the city doesn’t grow or advance if industry does not come.

How is that so hard to understand?

They create tax breaks to entice companies to locate in places they otherwise wouldn’t consider...
Their requirements are more of a hinderance than the tax breaks offer.

How does the business gain anything in the scenario created by the city council?

They get a tax break, but they have to build in what is likely a crime ridden area, which will impact their employee pool, and they have to pay significantly more than they would in other locations.

Where is the incentive?

My mental picture of the area you are describing is pretty much Exxon in NBR.

Good paying jobs surrounded by shitholes and you have to have fences with triple stringed barbed wire protecting the facility and the parking lot.

That's all you can do, and I agree... it's disturbing. But they are doing it to themselves at this point.

What companies have moved to or stated that they will build in New Orleans?

The only recent one Scruffy can find is DXC Technology in 2017, which, by the way, occurred prior to this and involved SIGNIFICANT tax incentives.

Hell, the last thing Scruffy saw was Tidewater LEAVING New Orleans for Houston.

Okay so no one will take advantage of the tax breaks. Why is everyone outraged over this? Read the comments in this thread if you fail to see my point.

Because businesses won’t come to the city.

That hurts the city. No industry, no jobs, loss of tax base, etc.

Do you seriously not understand that?

If cities don’t pull in industry, they turn into Detroit.

Hell, last year, New Orleans showed a decrease in population for the first time since Katrina.

Ever heard of competition?

Other states and cities will offer tax breaks without this rigmarole. Guess where the business will go?

Businesses arent coming to the city now so it doesn’t really change anything.
While I think the idea isn’t great, they may get a few companies to take the bait. They definitely need more incentives for businesses to relocate here and we all agree that this isn’t the best way to do it.

As I read it,

it's an anti-business development law.

NOLA must be against commerce.

Nola isn’t trying to attract chemical plants!. We don’t want an Exxon BR situation. I don’t agree with the stipulations but there’s more than one type of “ industry” to attract and some already include high paying jobs so that’s half the battle. Locating into a disadvantaged area will be cheaper and it’s as safe as any place with the right security. Employees can drive 10 minutes from work in Nola and be in an affluent area.

Potentially paying a high school dropout more than some Firemen, Police, and Teachers... And NOLA residents will pay for it all.

I completely comprehend. I don’t understand the outrage. If this incentive is poorly designed, no one will take advantage, and nothing is lost.

So tax incentives are now anti-business? Does this incentive reduce business in any way? Are current businesses going to shut their doors because of tax incentives designed to develop business in other parts of the city?

The LABI shrills are strong in this thread.

Look, I think NOLA council is going overboard, but ITEP has been a disaster.

Local governments should have control over property taxes and property tax exemptions.

I'm not sure NOLA needs any more low wage jobs. So, if the options are, a bunch of low wage jobs AND we give away the store in property tax exemptions, or, no new low wage jobs and no new property tax exemptions, I'm not sure that is a terrible idea.

Those kind of exemptions are ridiculous anyways. I can't stand when the government starts to pick winning and losing industries.

This is what I thought of first after reading the article. Having a small tech company that’s paying coders $75k a year in the 7th ward isn’t unrealistic. Millennials making big bucks like that kinda vibe.

Wouldn’t that proposed Entergy plant in the East take advantage of this.

People starting businesses aren’t taking advice from plant workers from Watson.
