re: Would you rather be rich in a small, run down southern town or average in a nice city?

So yeah you might have a nice 5000sqft house on a $1000 a month mortgage, but when you want to go out to eat or grab a beer, it's at the run down bar where you have more teeth that the other patrons combines.
In some places.
Or could live 10 minutes outside of Natchez(plenty enough to do) own a shitload of land and be very wealthy. Same goes for places like New Roads which is nice little town with a good enough private school
There are wealthy people who live in the middle of nowhere 20 minutes from Baton Rouge.

$150k-200k a year isn't going to be "very wealthy" though. And that's basically the standard of comfortable suburban living as defined in the OP.

Is staying put an option? Small town, lots of land/privacy and not hurting for money? I would take my own situation over the two you have presented. I am not even remotely wealthy but I am happy... which is what matters. I turned my back on having a big bank account and being miserable 4 years ago...

There would need to be a reason to stay in the shithole.
Example - I know people who are rich and pretty much run a podunk town across the river. They stay there because they own the main business in the area and a lot of the land.
They basically do a lot of hunting and other outdoor stuff because there’s nothing else to do but drink and frick underaged girls.

I'll just put it this way. I'd rather live on 2 acres in Pointe Coupee parish and go to My Mama's or Satterfields every weekend than live in one those new subdivisions off of Bluebonnet

Good public schools and I get to live close to work without much traffic? Sign me up!

But only until the top cooler in America comes to town and cuts you down to size, Brad Wesley. No more Jasper Improvement Society extortion money, no more hogging both lanes as you sing Sinatra tunes in your 6 cylinder convertible Mustang, no more stuffed polar bears and no more Jimmy the prison rapist. Dalton is in the house!

Well my parents are considered "rich" for where they live, which is very rural LA.
They live in a nice home with a pool and currently finishing up their 1,200 sq ft pool house. They also live on 50 acres surrounded by 30,000 acres of Kisatchie National Forest.
They certainly don't "mesh" with the methhead crowd, but they don't really mesh with the uptown people either
I would choose their life over living in the suburbs anyday. I'm getting old. I don't need restaurants or nightlife at my doorstep like I used to.

Average, cookie cutter style lifestyle in a nice suburb somewhere. Nothing special, just a nice upkept town. You have enough money to pay your bills and maintain your home. You have enough for any emergency expenses but not a whole lot more. Kids go to good public schools. You and your wife are close to your jobs and commuting is a non issue.
I'd choose this one, even if I had to send my kids to private school. It's kinda similar to a situation I live in now. I could move to "the country", but that sounds terrible, as it is Lafayette is too small. I couldn't imagine living somewhere smaller/more remote.

Your hypothetical does not really make sense as to why you possibly have to BE in the shitty little town.
I've seen this a LOT having lived in Natchez. A guy marries a gal he meets at LSU or Ole Miss. She's from Natchez. He becomes a doctor and they move back to Natchez after his residency.
They are treated like demigods and specialists make salaries on par with midsized cities. Part of me can see the allure. And $600k can get you a frickTON of housing in Adams county, antebellum mansion downtown or new ranch style house on 15 acres on the edge of town.
But the pragmatic in me would rather live in a town with a at least one Full Service hospital/ER, local news station, and university. You really don't miss those things until you move to a small town.

So now it takes $600k to live a normal life in a city?
Edit: I know that's not really what you were saying, just applying your statement to the OP's premise.

Give me the small town
I can always build a house on the outskirts
Btw if a couple can’t live comfortably off 150k a year in suburbs then they’re doing something wrong

I saw the shitty small town in the OP as being much shittier than Natchez.

They're keeping up with the Joneses just like everyone else in the neighborhood.

It saddens me that so many of y'all are so unhappy with your lives that you feel like you have to get away from it. I see a lot of unmarried chicks post 25 that try to hide their loneliness with travel

My situation is similar to scenario A. Fiancée and I make very good money for ourselves, but live in a cheaper area (small house surrounded by similar homes) to save for a nicer home in the future. I can’t wait to get the frick out. Our neighbors are garbage. You don’t want to voluntarily surround yourself by trash so I’d say B is the better choice.

I think I'd pick option 1 if married, but I'd definitely pick it as a single guy.
The big fish is going to be swimming in loads of hot, country tail. The average fish might get a few nibbles if he's funny/hung/etc.

How far away is option A from the nearest major airport?
