Average, cookie cutter style lifestyle in a nice suburb somewhere. Nothing special, just a nice upkept town. You have enough money to pay your bills and maintain your home. You have enough for any emergency expenses but not a whole lot more. Kids go to good public schools

I guess maybe it makes sense if he's suggesting you're making essentially the same amount of money in both scenarios.

This part doesnt make sense. The only reason I live where I do is because this is where I make my living. If I could make my living in a larger city 45 minutes away, i'd live there.

Travel is huge to me. Having extra cash for that would be a deal maker for me.
But if you’re saying I’m only rich in comparison and not actually rich, thus I can’t afford a lot of travel, then this is a no brained big city choice.

My wife and I have contemplated this before. We come from the same small town and our current income would probably make us 1%ers over there. We could be closer to family and old friends, build a larger house on acres of land, and probably afford more luxuries than we do now. There are boundless outdoor activities, but you have to drive 45 minutes for a mall or decent movie theater. And as you said, the schools are terrible and the community as a whole is fairly racist. The town is mostly black and the old white gentry moved to the country and send their kids to a still fairly bad private school. We enjoy BR well-enough but ultimately stay for the amenities and the greater opportunities for our kids. It's actually a very easy decision.

You could live on some country acreage and only go into town for groceries. $150k in rural Louisiana will buy you a,quite nice lifestyle.
