Would you rather be rich in a small, run down southern town or average in a nice city?

Let’s say you have the ability to be considered loaded in a small, crappy, run down Louisiana town. The problem is that there is absolutely nothing to do, you don’t mesh with the culture (cha) very well, and the schools are absolutely terrible. You have to commute about 30 minutes to work each morning but little to no traffic. You do have tons of extra money each month to spend however you’d like though. Land is cheap and you can buy acreage easily. 45 minutes or so from the nearest somewhat major city.

Or

Average, cookie cutter style lifestyle in a nice suburb somewhere. Nothing special, just a nice upkept town. You have enough money to pay your bills and maintain your home. You have enough for any emergency expenses but not a whole lot more. Kids go to good public schools. You and your wife are close to your jobs and commuting is a non issue. Easy access to shopping, if you can afford it. You'll never really own much land or anything due to the expense.

In both instances you and your wife work the same jobs, you both make the same amount of money, etc. The only difference is how far your money goes. Which would you choose and why?

Your hypothetical does not really make sense as to why you possibly have to BE in the shitty little town.

A bullet in my skull.

You're saying I'd live in a city where a household income of like $150k is rich.

Rich in the small shithole. Could travel anywhere I wanted if I got tired of the meth heads.

This would be my vote assuming the public schools are good and assuming you mean in the city - you say city in the title then suburb in your hypothetical.

If A, why are you confined to the small town? It doesn't make any sense.

So, you mean just having a good job and living in New Iberia, or having a good job and living right outside of Baton Rouge?

I would think most people would prefer being rich in a small town. Big fish in a little pond over being an average sized fish in an above average sized pond.

In that case, A, and save enough of that extra income to purchase something outside of a non-rundown Southern town.

I don't understand this mentality unless your happiness is somehow dictated by how others perceive you.

The commute part is what throws it off for me.

Why am I possibly choosing (or I guess in your hypo, being forced) to live in a shithole 30 minutes from where me and my wife are working?
