I don't understand this mentality unless your happiness is somehow dictated by how others perceive you.

So what is your happiness based on when living as an average fish in an above average size pond?

Personally I would be depressed living as an average fish in town. It's not being the bigger fish that makes me happy, it's not being surrounded by a bunch of average fish just like me that makes me happy. Why would I want to live in cookie cutter ville? Now if I truly have to live in that small town and can't be the nice house with the huge multi acerage lot on the edge of town, then both of these options are the same to me....miserable and depressing. I will gladly keep my beautiful/private acres of land I have now, 5 minutes away from the closest shitty little town, and make my 30 minute commute to Lafayette every day.

He just said a "nice" city, not necessarily big. Doesn't have to be NY or SF, and wouldn't be a shithole.

If A, why are you confined to the small town? It doesn't make any sense.

I interpreted the question to mean that you have the same amount of dollars in option A and B, but that $$ is considered to be rich in Option A while it's considered to be average in Option B.

Yeah, I misread that. I'd still go with A, in my current situation, but that might change with kids in OP's scenario.

If you consider Lafayette "nice" and a "city" then sure.

As I see it, if your "richness" in the small shitty town is only enough money to make you "average" in generic city suburb USA, it's not going to be enough "richness" to make shitty nowhere small town worthwhile in any relative fashion.

Although, depending on the generic city suburb, both options could likely suck about equally.

I am not driving more than 15 mins to work. If I can't afford the area to do that, then I'll relocate.

Give me rich in the small town, especially if it's near the water.

The options were not "average in a city" and "frick you money in a small town."

You're not flying private in either of the OP's scenarios.

I would pick the first one because it only specified that I had a wife, not kids. We could use the extra money to travel and do fun things together.

I choose to be Brad Wesley everytime. It's good to be worshiped for bringing J.C. Penney to town.

Plus you get to share a girl with your son.

Nor did the OP specify that it had to be in Louisiana.

If I'm rich can't I just move my rich arse out of the sticks and live (according to you) happily ever after in the city?

Also, if I'm rich, why am I working?

Yeah the money that makes you average in the suburb isn't going to be rich by any definition unless your neighbors are trailer trash. So yeah you might have a nice 5000sqft house on a $1000 a month mortgage, but when you want to go out to eat or grab a beer, it's at the run down bar where you have more teeth that the other patrons combines.
