How is that strange? I agree that he shouldn't press for the money back or anything like that, but at the end of the day, he gave him $20 specifically for stuff to make a chicken dip to bring to a gathering. The deadbeat took the money, and presumably did not make, nor bring a chicken dip that he asked for money for.

And you are saying that it is "mega strange" for him to ask for the money back? That's pretty wild, man. If OP wants to ask for his money back, his well within reason to do so.

You know one of the reasons shitty people keep doing so many shitty things these days, over and over? Its because people stopped calling shitty people out. There is not nearly enough ostracization in 2026, and society suffers for it.

Never engage these types.

Let it go, then never engage him outside of work discussions again.

These guys are parasites. Seem like good guys just bad luck at first, then you realize they’re the problem and can’t get rid of them.

It is honestly not that hard. Most people are the own worst enemy! I have worked in this warehouse for 14 years after serving 4 years in the USAF...I look like I am poor, drive à shitty car but own my house and have over 250k in my 401k at 40 years old. Then I work with people that drive a brand new car, can barely pay rent and don't even know what a 401k is...

That $20 paid for you to have a lot less headache in the future. Now you’ll know to tell him to frick off next time he comes with a sob story. It was a hell of an investment in the long run

I can't believe this is even a serious question. 20 bucks? You are presumably a grown arse adult dealing with someone much younger that apparently has a shitfest of a life anyway. And not only that you didn't even "loan" him the money, you gave it to him with the full expectation that it was gone from your pocket permanently.

Asking for it back because you didn't get a shitty tailgate dip is just mega strange.

Shut up douche, it was a legit question... like the ones that get asked on here hourly... You are "strange" if you ask me!

Take the L, mate. Not worth the smoke. Just learn from it and laugh at him next time he gives you a sob story.

He hustled you. Let him know you do not appreciate it and move on.

These.

Knowing how I am, I would 100% say something to him. I wouldn't try to get the money back since a) it's only 20 bucks, and b) you told him initially to not worry about paying you back anyway.

But learn your lesson and never lend him another dime. And any time he tries to small talk you and poor mouth about his situation, I would laugh at him and tell him to go frick himself with that bullshite.

Oh, I REALLY like that idea, especially since it's a warehouse type situation. Nicknames are common around there.

F off, I served in the military for 4 years after High School... I make decent money and have a job that is good to me! I still haven't used my GI bill which can be passed on to my children. Get off your high horse, what is your profession? Born millionaire like most on here? Some of you posters on here are ridiculous!

Take the L. It could be worse, you could be getting your credit destroyed like his sister who co-signed the car loan.

at the end of the day, he loaned him $20

false. He gave him $20. There was never any presumption taht it would be returned to him. It literally says in OP: "don't worry about paying me back". That money was gone forever the instant he gave it away.

At the end of the day OP decided to part with $20 and eat at a potluck. Both of those things happened, just minus one side dish. whooptie doo

quote:

The deadbeat took the money,

yep, which is why you shoudln't give money to deadbeats in the first place unless you know you aren't getting it back

quote:

nor bring a chicken dip that he borrowed the money for

you keep saying borrow and loan, which is still false. It was given.

quote:

you are saying that it is "mega strange" for him to ask for the money back?

Yes, it's petty and small and makes him look like a cheap bastard. If for example OP loaned him a couple hundred bucks to fix his vehicle, but instead bought some new Jordans, I am singing a totally different tune here.

quote:

You know one of the reasons shitty people keep doing so many shitty things these days, over and over? Its because people stopped calling shitty people out.

How can you say this, yet then turn around and not recognize that OP is simply enabling the shittiness to begin with?

"hey man can I have $20?"
"no"

there you go.

It only cost you $20 to see that this guy is full of shite. Don't deal with him anymore, problem solved.

Ever see The Big Lebowski? There’s a scene when he’s realizing he could have avoided all his current problems if he’d had just accepted the pee stains on his rug and moved on. If the question is ever “should I just take the L” the answer is almost always yes.

Don’t invite $2,000 worth of problems over $20.

Move on.
