Why people who don’t seem to need it take advantage of government assistance

Guy in the other thread called his neighbor trashy for being ok financially but still taking advantage of free meals from school for her grandchildren. If she’s like me, her thinking is, “My tax dollars made it possible, I’m going to get it, too.”
Here’s a situation that I experienced yesterday that will illustrate my point. I was standing in line in the grocery store behind an older lady, a younger lady, and two children. They were dressed very well, and the children were playing on iPhones while they waited. They had three buggies completely full of items. Cashier finished ringing up the purchase, $394 and change. Amount they paid out of pocket, $7 and change. I make my purchase (paid for from my bank account) and leave the store. In the parking lot, same group is still loading food into a late model luxury car. It’s much nicer than what I drive. Pretty easy to understand, eh?

You forget to include large seafood/steak purchase and spinners on the car.

I honestly didn’t look at the specific groceries they were purchasing.

If free shite is there, why would you not take it?

The vibe I got wasn’t the fact that she was doing it, but the fact that she felt the need to bring it up and brag about it.
Throwing in the “we don’t actually need it though” for good measure.

How fat were they? You forgot to mention if they were fat. Very important detail.

In high school I use to work with a guy who would sell his moms food stamps because she got way more than she needed. He use to try and get me to buy them

Need to go back to commodities
No reason to use a SNAP card at a gas station for a 3.00 Starbucks drink

I bet if you had followed them home, they live in a dump in a shitty neighborhood. Poor people tend to spend "their" money on dumb shite.

Well, this story happens to be true.

This is very true. I once got rerouted through a ghetto because my route was blocked by a parade and 85% of the cars I saw were nicer than mine and probably cost more than the house they were parked at.

Why didn't you follow them to their house and give us a Zillow estimate?

You don't know their personal situation so why are you trying to judge them.
Maybe both parents got laid off from their jobs and temporarily using government aid to make ends meet? Maybe they are also taking care of aging parents in addition to their families? During times like this, people who normally wouldn't use government aid are using it. I know sure as hell if I'm ever in a position to need it, I'm getting it and I wouldn't give a damn what anyone would think about it.

Point of information: I don't know how govt assistance works....how do you know what they spent out of pocket?
But I understand what you mean. My church has a school and preschool. In PA, there is a program called "Apple". It is basically a subsidy from the gov't for childcare. The church secretary would often comment that the families with Apple were driving late model Escalades and getting their nails done every week. Meanwhile, she was working full time to pay for her kids to attend the same school.

Who/what picked up the $387? Not that I don't believe you, just genuinely curious.

I think many taxpayers who have paid IN for 20/30 years have a natural desire to take something OUT at a time when The State has basically ordered Many of them to stop earning. That said, when I suggested half-jokingly to my 16 year old daughter that we go get the free lunch pickup at her school, she gave me a lecture on the social contract and leaving it for people who really need it. I love that kid !
