I got a mystery check after Katrina and called to let them know it was a mistake. They said in essence, "Don't worry about it and cash it".

We took that La Purchase card after Katrina when they offered it...
Replaced all the food in my fridge and freezer that we lost.
Some of it was irreplaceable like a bunch of venison, shrimp and fish I had in the freezer.
There was a rumor after that the card was going to expire, so we went to Sam's, who started taking the card after Katrina, loaded up on ribeyes and filets..
Frick it, paid into the system since I was 13, Katrina was 27 years later...
Allstate gave me 2500 for a living disruption payment. No one was pissing and moaning about that...
Oh yeah, we also got money from FEMA...
Are your still practicing liberalism? Or was that just a momentary thing?

This is very true. I once got rerouted through a ghetto because my route was blocked by a parade and 85% of the cars I saw were nicer than mine and probably cost more than the house they were parked at.
That's been the tradition for the 65 years I've been alive.

Its like volunteering to cook at your schools parent night, and then refusing to grab a plate.
If it weren't for you no one gets any food, so why act like its wrong to take the advantage?

No, it’s not (we can do this all day). It looks like you’ve been here long enough to really get yourself worked up. Maybe you should take a break. This thread wasn’t about condemning the people in the story. It was an effort to explain why working taxpayers take advantage of government assistance when it’s available.
They don't like to admit it but you are right. I bagged groceries for a regional supermarket in HS and it was a common occurrence. People getting $400 worth of nice meats and a bunch of 2 liter cokes and unhealthy junk food and paying $10 or so out of pocket.

You can see how a few got worked up over this issue.
It's true and they know it.

No disagreement from me. Just saying we felt we might be taking a service we didn't need at the expense of somebody who did.

Say what you will about the tenants of national socialism, at least it's an ethos

They had three buggies completely full of items. Cashier finished ringing up the purchase, $394 and change. Amount they paid out of pocket, $7 and change. In the parking lot, same group is still loading food into a late model luxury car. It’s much nicer than what I drive. Pretty easy to understand, eh
How do you know they didn't pay .50 on the dollar for those food stamps?

I don’t, obviously.

I feel for you. Having to watch that must have been hard.
To make matters worse for you, I’m getting a forgivable loan to pay myself for the 8 weeks that my business is shut down, even though I have plenty of cash on hand. My rationale is that on July 15, I’m going to send the fed gov a 6 figure check, which will include the 20k or so they’re about to send me. It’s a shell game. When they stop seizing my profits, I’ll stop taking “handouts”.

Why people who don’t seem to need it take advantage of government assistance
Why do people who can afford it look for loopholes in tax law?

If anything, I would like to learn how to game the system as well.

It’s not free ignorant arse... the working tax payers fund it and the government redistributes it to low life’s who abuse the system.
